Vet to CRE
Fellow monkeys,
First time poster but have been following along. Long story short, I transitioned out of the military as a junior officer and directly into a graduate real estate program. I’m closing in on a year in the program and have maintained a 4.0 GPA, held a PERE (family office-type) internship during the semester, and have acquired some online financial modeling certs.
With that said, I have faced some roadblocks in finding Summer Internships. Admittedly, quite a few have been submitted into online blackholes. Still, I could use some tips on how to go about building relationships for both the internship and future job hunt.
Might not be the route you want to take, but you're a prime target for I-sales and I'd be shocked if you couldn't get traction there.

I can second this. Ive seen several people with your profile working at CBRE or JLL. Brokerage is solid way to make connections with buy side companies and if you’re good at sales can be lucrative. Given your background, I would at least network with people in that field
Network, network, network. Resume dumps are a huge waste of time.
You need to be cold emailing your resume and a short note to more people than you can imagine in hopes of getting on the phone or grabbing coffee with them.
Assuming you are in a market of some size, you should be able to network with alumni and/or former military in CRE (there are lots), I think both groups would want to help you. LinkedIn makes it easy to find and search for people these days.
If you contact people you have an affinity with you will get a lot of positive responses, do it enough and it will lead to something. Also, don't forget about student memberships in local trade groups like NAIOP and ULI or whatever is powerful in your local market. Join and attend, if you have some free time, volunteer on committees. That will get you noticed fast.

Network. Especially with former vets in the industry, Bisnow has posted interviews with former services members in the industry every Memorial Day or Veterans Day (I can't remember which). Shoot your shot and reach out to them.
LinkedIn might be useful to filter some of your searches: Specific Market -> RE Industry -> Past Employers/Keywords being something related to Military/specific branches.
What market are you in? Might be able to provide a few vets in the industry if it's a market where I have some contacts.
