What are the best firms to target for entry-level roles?

Hey Everyone,

I’ve made some posts on WSO before and they’ve all been very helpful. Just to reiterate, I graduated from a state university (none-target), 4.0GPA & summa cum laude, with a B.S. in Management Info. Systems. Although my degree is STEM, it does not compare to the desirable degrees such as Accounting, Finance, and Economics.

Ideally, I’d like to eventually land an Acquisitions or Development role, and to reach the top firms. I understand that these firms prefer an MBA/MSRE from a T10 school.

Currently, I’m employed as a Process Analyst (Business Analysis) at a F500 energy company, but the role itself has been pissing me off tremendously. The company itself has a high employee turnover rate. Prior to this role, I was a Logistics Coordinator at a transportation company.

I’m 26 years old and unfortunately, time isn’t on my side. What are the best firms to target besides JLL, CBRE, M&M, etc.? I’m located in CT, so NY & MA would be the nearest states.

Thanks in advance!

Hey Everyone,

I've made some posts on WSO before and they've all been very helpful. Just to reiterate, I graduated from a state university (none-target), 4.0GPA & summa cum laude, with a B.S. in Management Info. Ideally, I'd like to eventually land an Acquisitions or Development role, and to reach the top firms. I understand that these firms prefer an MBA/MSRE from a T10 school.

Currently, I'm employed as a Process Analyst (Business Analysis) at a F500 energy company, but the role itself has been pissing me off tremendously. The company itself has a high employee turnover rate. Prior to this role, I was a Logistics Coordinator at a transportation company.

Time is on your side.  You're only 26, what did you expect to be doing?  CEO of Hines?

The best role is the one that actually will give you a shot, especially if it's in an area you're interested in.  Get your foot in the door and don't worry about the next step.  If your expectation is that you'll be retiring by 35 anyway, then it's not the right industry - real estate has an investment horizon counted in years, not weeks or months.

Go work for an appraiser, if you have to.  Go to every networking event you can find.  And honestly, learn even the smallest iota about the industry.  You say you want to be in an acquisitions or development role, but you mention three firms that have nothing to do with those fields.  Those are brokerages.  If you can't talk intelligently about 3 developers or REPE shops, then I really don't think your interview process will go well.  Figure out what you want, learn about that industry, and then start looking for a job in it.

Thank you for your comment and I'm glad to hear that I'm still "young" although I feel stuck with my current situation. I'm not expecting to retire by 35, but I feel behind in terms of my degree, opportunities, and whatnot.

Pertaining to the brokerages I listed, I only mentioned them because I seen posts and spoke to individuals who mentioned that they'd be the "best" in terms of getting my foot in the door and gaining experience. However, my main concern is, with my degree in Management Info. Systems, that if I were to land a data or business analyst position, I'd still have a difficult time pivoting into my preferred roles. I'd like to avoid hitting a dead-end, especially, since I don't come from a target school or have a "desirable" degree.

In terms of networking, I have tried to connect with several individuals on LinkedIn and in-person but they have been a hit-or-miss and looked into ULI & NAIOP events. Again, thank you for the comment and if you'd recommend any REPE shops or developers, I'd greatly appreciate it.
