Where to get started on RE prep?

As the title suggests, I’m looking to learn more about RE in preparation for REPE aspirations. However, I have 0 background in the space and don’t really know where to start. Would be amazing if those in the know-how could point me in a direction. Thanks so much.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some steps to get started on Real Estate (RE) preparation, especially if you have aspirations for Real Estate Private Equity (REPE):

  1. Financial Modeling Skills:

    • Adventures in CRE: This is a recommended resource for building a solid foundation in RE modeling.
    • REFM (Real Estate Financial Modeling): Another valuable resource to consider.
    • Marquee: Useful for learning financial modeling.
    • Argus: Important for real estate financial modeling, especially for commercial real estate.
  2. Books and Guides:

    • Look for books that cover industry and valuation methods. This can provide a theoretical understanding and practical insights into REPE.
  3. Practical Experience:

    • If possible, gain hands-on experience through internships or entry-level positions in real estate finance or related fields.
  4. Networking and Forums:

    • Engage with forums like Wall Street Oasis to ask questions, share experiences, and learn from others in the industry.
  5. Courses and Training:

    • Consider enrolling in courses offered by WSO Academy, such as the WSO Elite Modeling Package, which includes:
      • Excel Modeling Course
      • PowerPoint for Finance Course
      • Financial Statement Modeling
      • LBO Modeling Course
      • M&A Modeling Course
      • Valuation Modeling Course
  6. Local Resources:

    • Speak to a local attorney and CPA to understand asset protection and bookkeeping, which are crucial for managing real estate investments.

By following these steps, you can build a strong foundation in real estate and prepare effectively for a career in REPE.
