why are there zero jobs in SoCal?

Currently working in originations (senior aso level) for a MM fund in NYC. Have been trying to find a decent gig in LA for 6+ months, and truthfully haven't gotten much traction. Is anyone else having better luck? It seems like there's way more opportunities in NYC and SF, so any input would be appreciated!

In the last 6 or so months I've seen listings from Trammell Crow, Hines, Related, Lincoln, Oaktree, Mill Creek, Irvine Company, CIM, LBA, etc., along with a lot of less well-known places and a strange amount of energy companies.

I will say that most of them are either analyst/associate or senior managing director level, with the 6-10 years of experience VP or Director level far more rare, but I've definitely seen them.

If you have no connection to LA, and you didn't graduate from USC, and you've primarily worked on deals outside of California, I think you're gonna have a hard time finding a gig out here. There are already so many local people looking for roles. Obviously need to network, but still gonna be rough.

In LA, been searching for more than 6 months and can confirm it's been pretty dead. I get interviews here and there but it's still a feeling of no rush to hire. Also been considering SF, I don't know if i'm really seeing more opportunities up there or much of a difference.

I can confirm with CRE that there are roles in the renewable space that are popping up, and i've seen them be around for a while since last year but i haven't heard of anyone landing role in that space. Also, roles related to data centers also seem to be growing as well.

Does your search include Newport Beach/Orange County? Some institutional shops often base their SoCal headquarters down there rather than LA, so that might cast a wider net for you.
