CV Review for Spring Weeks (Be Honest as possible)

Left out A level Grades cause their Shit (BBB) only got into the semi because of contextual, CV is not fully complete working on Valuation for a Live deal at the moment at my internship, and have a equity research project lined up for a different firm. Diversity Male btw if that still helps, Do I stand even a tiny chance??? or will A levels still overshadow my efforts

Your A-level grades (BBB) might not be ideal, but they don't necessarily overshadow your efforts if you strategically position your CV. Here's what you need to focus on to maximize your chances for Spring Weeks:

1. Highlight Your Strengths

  • Internship Experience: Working on valuation for a live deal is a strong point. Make sure to emphasize this on your CV, detailing your contributions and the skills you've gained (e.g., financial modeling, market analysis).
  • Equity Research Project: Once completed, include this as well. Highlight any deliverables, such as reports or insights, and how they demonstrate your analytical and research skills.
  • Diversity: If applicable, leverage diversity programs or initiatives that target underrepresented groups in finance. Many banks have specific Spring Week programs for diverse candidates.

2. Downplay Weaknesses

  • A-level Grades: Since they are not strong, it's wise to leave them out if the application doesn't explicitly require them. Focus on your university performance and relevant experiences instead.
  • Contextual Admission: If your university is semi-target and you got in through contextual factors, this won't necessarily hurt you. Banks are increasingly aware of contextual admissions and value candidates who have overcome challenges.

3. Networking

  • Networking can be a game-changer, especially if your academic background isn't stellar. Reach out to alumni, attend events, and connect with professionals in the industry. A strong referral can sometimes outweigh weaker grades.

4. Tailor Your CV

  • Make sure your CV is concise, well-structured, and tailored to the Spring Week programs. Use bullet points to clearly outline your achievements and skills. Quantify your impact wherever possible (e.g., "Built a financial model that contributed to a $10M valuation").

5. Leverage Your Diversity

  • Many banks have diversity-focused initiatives. As a diversity candidate, you may have access to specific programs or events that can help you stand out. Make sure to research and apply to these opportunities.

6. Prepare for Interviews

  • If your CV gets you through the door, your performance in interviews will be critical. Be ready to discuss your experiences, motivations, and technical knowledge. Practice behavioral and technical questions thoroughly.

Final Thoughts:

You absolutely stand a chance, but you'll need to be strategic. Focus on your strengths, leverage your diversity, and network aggressively. While A-levels might be a minor hurdle, your recent experiences and efforts can outweigh them if presented effectively. Keep building your profile with internships and projects, and don't let the grades discourage you.

Why are you getting mediocre grades? Even after A-levels where you got BBB - sure you might have extenuating circumstances, you continued to get a 2:1 at your semi target in your first year...

Tells me two things - you are either not bright and/or you are not hardworking enough.

That's fair, I didn't take first year seriously because it didn't count, I fixed up halfway through the year and got a 64% average which I don't think is too bad considering I did piss all. But what's done is done, nothing I can do about it now, I am trying to move in the right direction by grinding applications and experience while going through first year material again so I can keep on top of the work in second year. I know this is going to be a uphill battle but I might as well try and not have regrets. Any advice?? to break in with these shit grades
