Junior at Small Liberal Arts Non-Target (aka HELP)

Hey, everyone. Here's my resume. In advance, I greatly appreciate the help! I'm honestly more interested in commercial lending etc than I am in IB, so keep that somewhat in mind. Not sure how much that would change your ideas, but thought I should say that nonetheless.

Also, my mom and I have a small (I stress small) operation where we make and sell ties etc. Should I include that somewhere on the resume? If so, where?

Don't hold back! I need all the help I can get!

Folkstyle wrestling is your basic high school wrestling, but there are tournaments that are outside of just High School sanctioned events. I also help with a local high school team in my spare time. There are 3 types, so I just wanted to be specific in case anyone cared. Freestyle and Greco are in the Olympics.

I am fairly certain that it will be an uphill battle as well. I am located near Charlotte, and I have been networking quite a bit already. At one bank I have contacted the person over all of their undergrad programs. Slowly but surely.

Yeah, I might drop the "folkstyle" terminology only because to the non-wrestling world it makes you seem like some kind of hick wrestling in your back yard.

That's good you're near Charlotte because I was picturing you out in the boondocks of Iowa. That's def a good enough location to make something happen with networking.

Hahahahaha. When I thought about it I understand why you thought "Folkstyle" sounded funny (as well as why you thought I was in Iowa) Will do.

Yes, my Dad is super into cars and has owned several older Rolls' and Bentley's. I have been enrolled as a member since birth basically. Will change the margins though!

WSO Resume Review Score*: 5 (out of 15 possible)

  1. Wording/Bullets: 1.5
  2. Layout/Format: 1
  3. Overall: 2.5
  • Note: This score is based on a subjective assessment of three different criteria all on a 1 to 5 scale (1 = poor, 2 = below avg, 3 = average, 4 = very good, 5 = excellent) based on my own experience reviewing thousands of resumes in the past and based on the current state of the posted resume.

Some explanation of the grading:

1, Wording/Bullets: This score represents the overall wording of the bullets and content throughout the resume. Are there action words? are the experiences explained clearly? Does the candidate quantify their impact where possible?

  1. Layout/Format: This score represents to overall layout and format. Finance professionals are notorious for being anal. Although this score is somewhat subjective, there are certain things we look for including consistency, spacing, clean look, clear sections, proper order, good margins, etc.

  2. Overall: This score represents the experiences and school of the candidate and is the hardest to change in the short term. Improving the Wording/Bullets and Layout/Format scores can bump this grade up (usually by 1 grade at most), however, this grade depends largely on the School, GPA, Internships, Leadership, Extracurriculars of the applicant, etc.

We are going to try to provide a candid / direct grading system for as many resumes as we can in this Public Resume Review forum, with the hopes that it will lead candidates that need help on #1. and #2 criteria to consider the WSO Resume Review service that has experienced professionals ready to help bring the #1 and #2 score as close to a 4 or 5 as possible. Due to time contraints, I can't provide more detail and I can only provide this grade to each candidate once (if you try to repost and updated version under a different username, i will recognize it and ignore). What I will say is that if you aren't at a 4 or 5 in Wording and Layout, we can probably help you make significant improvments.

Some more guidelines for total overall score:

3 - 6: Needs MAJOR help / improvements in several areas 7 - 8: Has some major flaws but also has some good areas 9 - 11: An average to slightly above average resume that could still use some help but it is on "ok" shape 12 - 13: A competitive resume that should be able to land some competitive interviews 14 - 15: An impressive resume on all or almost all levels. Wording/Bullets/Layout/format and overall experience, grades, school, etc are all excellent or very good.

We suggest if you score in the bottom 3 categories listed above that you strongly consider the WSO Resume Review service. Whatever you decide, best of luck!

Thanks, Patrick

I understand why my wording may need some help, but as far as layout goes I thought I used a pretty standard format and was pretty consistent. Thanks though. Anyone else have any thoughts?

Okay, let's take this from the top.

Education: You don't need to list every instance of Dean's List. Just have it once. I'd also remove "/4.0" from the GPAs. And maybe list the second number. Personally, and maybe I am neurotic, but I read 3.6 as 3.55 and there is a huge difference. Do you have a 3.94 or do you have a 3.85 for your major? Is relevant coursework... relevant? Surely you've taken courses in finance.

You mention that you are an accountant. Do you have a license? Or are you a bookkeeper? Clarify this. Someone will call you on it. And write out GL. Someone in HR is not going to be entirely familiar with jargon.

"Teamwork" is not a skill, either. Same with accounting/finance skills. Why is it basic when you are studying it? Be mindful of your continuity.

Remove the on-campus involvement from the bottom, too. Have it listed in education. And does philanthropy have an official title? Is it a club? Clarify that.

Interests: Where were these investment competitions? Is it through an organization at school? And, definitely remove the Rolls Royce Owner's Club. That's silly. You are early 20s and to state that you've been a member for nearly two decades is mindless. If you feel that your pieces in the newsletter have been worthwhile, then consider a publication section of your resume. Wrestling is out of place, too.

Most importantly, your resume should tell a narrative. What does it say about you? How have you grown over the years? What have you accomplished? How does everything fit into where you want to go?

Formatting: Not sure why the date and place are in the middle. Push it to the far right. This is subjective, but I think it looks weird if you capitalize the departments in the bullet points ("in the Accounting/Finance department").
