Submitting Resume Prior to FT

Hi guys,

I was wondering if I could get some "resume advice" structure. I am confident enough in my resume that I do not need to post it, but I do need a couple of "structure" suggestions. Let me explain my situation.

I begin for a FT MM bank come summer time. Between now and then, I intend to contact some alumni at different BB and elite boutiques with the hope of "lateraling" after my first year. I want to get started with the connections early with the hope that we will have time to speak a few times, meet up in the City at some point, and get to a point where they will really be willing to go to bat for me. Another plus is that they may find a way for me to go through the FT undergraduate analyst recruiting (I don't mind going back a year). Enough there.

Here are the questions I have for the resume I will attach to the initial email:

  1. On my resume now, I currently have the following subsections, in order: Education, Relevant Experience (internships), Athletics (D1 sport, it takes up four lines), Activities (volunteer, etc.), and Skills. Pretty standard. How should I structure the resume I send out? I know that after graduating, it usually becomes (in this order), Work Experience, Education, Skills/Interests. However, when I send it out, I won't really have any work experience because it will be before I start. I would also like to place as much emphasis on the Athletics and Volunteer experience as possible, because they are usually really good talking points. Would something like... Work Experience, Education, Athletics, Activites work?

  2. Should I include my GPA? My cumulative will be nothing spectacular (3.4 - 3.5), but my major GPA is a respectable 3.7. Again, this would be a no-brainer if it were actual FT recruiting, but it's more lateral recruiting than anything.

  3. Under work experience, can I include my FT IBD analyst position even if I haven't started? I obviously would have zero detail on how I performed at the position, but what would I put as date? "- Present" or "July 2009"?

  4. One last one about GPA. Say I graduate with a 3.44. Would I be able to post a cumulative of "3.5 / 4.0," or would I be better off going "3.44 / 4.00" on the resume? For FT recruiting I always rounded up to the next closest tenth (I had a 3.32 in the fall, rounded to 3.4 on my resume), but there was also the possibility of grade fluctuation which made it OK. What do we think here?

Thanks guys, any and all help is appreciated.

Much easier if you just post the resume. Use Razume.com, black out any personally identifiable details and post the link here. Critiquing is always easier if one can visualise it. Also, you may have missed other parts of your resume that could be improved on.

  1. Consider putting it in order of Education, Work experience, Athletics, Skills/Interests.. especially since it's alumni you'll be working through.

  2. Definitely include your GPA. If you're more comfortable, and since it's for a lateral position, you could probably just put your major GPA

  3. I would put it. Just one line. They'll definitely ask about it, giving you a perfect opportunity to say why you want to work for their bank.

  4. Also, I wouldn't round your GPA. It's not going to change and they will definitely see your transcript at some point.

As a disclaimer.. I'm going to be an SA, not a FT, so the above is just my opinion.

Don't worry about changing the order. If you still won't really have any FT experience and will be moving into another bank as a 1st year, then it's fine to keep the same order. The one change I would make is getting rid of/shrinking your athletics section (put it under activities or something... I can't imagine anything of value there that would take more than 1 (maybe 2) lines)

Yes, include your GPA. It's OK if you turn your 3.44 into a 3.5, but it really won't matter, so you may as well leave it. Put your major GPA on the same line if you'd like. (However, do NOT put your major gpa on it without putting your cum. gpa on it)

Don't put your FT experience until you actually start.
