3.3 GPA, 3 years exp

Quick stats:

3.3 GPA from non-target school (Finance and Accounting) 3 years (not there yet) of corp fin experience at major oil company (chevron, conoco, shell, etc.) target GMAT 700

I gave a good interview to get this job, plus I had some Oil industry related EC's. My gpa was low but I guess I made a decent impression.

I know most people have goals of going to HBS/Wharton/Booth, I'm not quite that ambitious. I would really like to go to Rice or UT. I would especially like to go to Rice, mostly because their campus is amazing with an awesome view of the Texas Medical Center (stupid reason but I don't care).

My gpa is low, and this is my main concern. I think 700 is a reasonable target for me. I will study my ass off for this test.

With all that being said, I'm still about 2.5 years away from grad school. I barely started my job 6 months ago. Although I'm relatively new, I've already been given some responsibility, I'm leading a project that's pretty high on my groups agenda.

What do you guys think about this profile? Do you think I need diverse experiences? I've been trying to see if I can get into an analyst position at a MM boutique in Houston. I'm not in an accounting role right now (but could be placed in one later down the line). I do fundamental analysis on companies that my company does business with. Pretty much a risk/credit analyst. My near future roles could be accounting/F&PA type roles. Is this valuable experience for a school like UT/Rice? I'm just wishing my low gpa does not hold me back too much....

I want to eventually work for a Hedge Fund. Its a damn long shot, but I'm going to give it all that I got. no bullshit.

You def. have the right attitude/mindset.

Given you kick ass at your job. Get good reccs and pull a 700+ GMAT, maybe CFA? you should be able to get into a top Tejas bschool. I would also recommend looking into MSFs if you want to get into a hedge fund later on down the road, just to expand your options.

You're right about applying for MM/boutique IBs maybe after a year or so on your current job, given you network you should be able to land a interviews at E&P focused shops.

I've seen people get in top bschools with 3.3s but they either had 5+ years of work experience and/or a really good story.
