3.32 GPA, 324 GRE, looking for top MBAs

Hi all, 24M from South Asia here. I am looking to apply in Round 1 for full time MBA programs for 2025 fall intake to:
1) NYU Stern
2) Johnson Cornell
3) UT-Austin McCombs
4) Columbia
5) Dartmouth Tuck
6) MIT Sloan

Post-MBA goals are to work in Investment Banking in the US (doesn’t matter which location).

Current profile:

  • 3.32/4.00 CGPA from local top-tier institute (bachelors in finance)
  • 2 years full time work experience in high finance (PwC and now one of the top investment banks of the country) - fast promotions and currently serving in a Managerial role which usually requires 4-5 years of experience
  • 324 GRE
  • Extra extensive social service and extracurricular leadership credentials.

Seeking advice on how to strengthen application and where do I have maximum chances of success. Thanks in advance :)

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and advice for your MBA application:

Profile Overview:

  • GPA: 3.32/4.00 from a top-tier local institute
  • GRE: 324
  • Work Experience: 2 years in high finance (PwC and a top investment bank in your country), with fast promotions to a managerial role
  • Extracurriculars: Extensive social service and leadership credentials

Target Schools:

  1. NYU Stern
  2. Johnson Cornell
  3. UT-Austin McCombs
  4. Columbia
  5. Dartmouth Tuck
  6. MIT Sloan

Strengthening Your Application:

  1. Highlight Leadership and Impact:

    • Emphasize your fast promotions and managerial role, showcasing your leadership and impact within your organizations.
    • Detail specific projects or initiatives where you made a significant difference.
  2. Quantify Achievements:

    • Use numbers to quantify your achievements (e.g., "led a team of X people," "increased efficiency by Y%," "managed a portfolio of $Z").
  3. Strong Recommendations:

    • Secure strong letters of recommendation from supervisors who can attest to your leadership, work ethic, and potential.
  4. Compelling Personal Statement:

    • Craft a compelling narrative in your personal statement that ties your past experiences to your future goals in investment banking.
    • Explain why each MBA program is a good fit for you and how it will help you achieve your career aspirations.
  5. Networking:

    • Connect with current students and alumni from your target schools to gain insights and potentially strengthen your application through referrals.
  6. Extracurriculars:

    • Highlight your extensive social service and leadership roles in extracurricular activities, demonstrating a well-rounded profile.

Chances of Success:

  • NYU Stern, Columbia, MIT Sloan: These schools are highly competitive. Your GRE score and work experience are strong, but your GPA is slightly below the average for these programs. Focus on differentiating yourself through your leadership roles and extracurriculars.
  • Johnson Cornell, UT-Austin McCombs, Dartmouth Tuck: These schools are also competitive but may offer a slightly better chance given your profile. Emphasize your fit with their programs and how you can contribute to their community.

Additional Tips:

  • Consider Retaking the GRE: If you believe you can significantly improve your score, it might be worth retaking the GRE to strengthen your application.
  • Application Timing: Ensure you apply in Round 1 to maximize your chances, as many schools have higher acceptance rates in the earlier rounds.

Good luck with your applications!

Hi, thank you for your comment!!

i actually want to pursue MBA since I have had a double promotion here in my company and feel I might be maxing out on what the country needs to offer.

moreover, considering the ailing economic conditions, the deal flow has been really slow. Therefore, looking to move to a more developed financial market.

also, let’s say we forget M7s, do you think Cornell, NYU, UT Austin, Ross are doable?

I also have had extensive extracurriculars including club leadership, debate team to foreign MUN, twice volunteered to teach underprivileged students and revamp the school’s syllabus, and headed my university’s MUN’s conference introducing Disability Inclusion for the first time in my country.

Yeah I think you have a good shot, but I do think you should get a bit more work experience and increase your GRE a little bit before gunning for the MBA. A common myth is that your pre MBA work experience won’t matter during your MBA OCR. This is false, if you go in with just two years of experience it’ll be harder for you to move up.
