Boston College Freshman Transfer to Target School For IB?? (Please Answer)

Hi, I’m a freshman at BC and I pay full price which honestly just nags me. I want to make every dollar worth it and get the best opportunities to make money after college so I hope this is understandable. To me college is more so a tool than an experience, I consider the experience to be sort of an added bonus. This is simply because it is so expensive and i’m not here to mess around. Would you guys recommend I transfer if i’m trying to break into high finance? I have an internship lined up for freshman summer. Don’t know what my GPA will be yet but keep in mind the business school has some BS curve that make it’s so that only the top 20% of the school can attain As.

Transferred out of BC to top school. Honestly stay, unless you hate it socially. BC has exceptional placements and if you're really that good it'll be easier to get into IB clubs and be one of the elite kids there (which of course is still highly competitive, but at the Ivies people at the top are absolute no-lifers). Plenty of BC alum at Centerview / Goldman / etc.

Transferring is a huge hit socially too. If you'd just be doing it for prestige then terrible idea.

Current student at BC here. Just curious what were your reasons for attending the school? Helpful to know before I start giving advice. Because it definitely depends on the context.

Just for some insight this is how our recruitment results were in the last few years:

~3-5 Top PE

~3-5 EBs

~5-10 Top BBs

~20 mid BBs

~20 top MMs

~10-20 boutiques

Sure, then if you don't care as much for social aspects and you only care for prestige and recruitment purposes then go ahead and try to lateral upwards to a different school. If you decide to stay at BC, you can definitely get great offers if you put the work in.

3-5 to top PEs is pretty good. We only have 5-10 people going to MF/UMM PE out of undergrad every year.

Unless you genuinely dislike BC, I would be apprehensive about transferring. BC is a great school, and any marginal boost in prestige won't open a ton of other doors. There were a number of people from BC at my BB. College at any private school, especially on the East or West Coast, is absurdly expensive nowadays. The only way to avoid the exuberant cost is to attend an in-state target (if you live in one of the states with a T30 state school) like Berkeley, Michigan, UT, etc., and the kids placing in IB out of these schools are exceptional candidates regardless.

The question is, do you like the social scene and have you made friends at BC yet? I think those are some great questions to think about. You can break into BBs if you have a good resume/profile from BC. I know EBs can be a little harder, but it's still possible if you network more. BC isn't too far from Boston, ~40-45 mins commute time by taking the green line, so you could easily intern in the city. If you want to transfer, beware that some T30 target schools like UMich/UVA/Stern can be very competitive regarding IB recruiting. Many folks at those schools joined the respective top finance clubs in their freshman year and have started the IB recruiting prep. You could consider schools like Georgetown or Notre Dame, where they are less competitive to recruit from and similar to BC in terms of religion. If you have started the IB prep and have a freshman summer internship lined up, you should be fine. Fyi, I go to one of ND/Georgetown/Amherst.
