Can someone give me some advice in transferring schools? Baruch vs NYU CAS, or wait and apply for Stern?
Good evening ladies and gentlemen,
I was hoping to get your professional and personal opinions about what I should currently do. I attend Hunter College (I know, not relevant for finance or business), and have been accepted to Baruch for the coming semester of Spring 2018. I also applied for NYU CAS.
I am currently a sophomore at Hunter, before that I was in the Marines. My question is, should I go to Baruch if I want to go into finance? Or Should I go to NYU CAS? One one side, Baruch is geared towards finance, while the closest thing at NYU CAS is the economics major. But on the other side, I have heard NYU in general has better networking opportunities (and the prestige with just the name alone).
Or should I stay at Hunter for another semester, and reapply to Baruch as a backup while applying to Stern to transfer in as a Junior? I feel much less inclined towards this option; not only is an external transfer extremely competitive, but NYU Stern does not take transfer credits towards their core curriculum. I feel that they would not take the majority of my credits, were I to transfer.
I currently have a 3.97 GPA at Hunter. Most of those classes are general requirements though, with the minimal relevant coursework being Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Intro to Accounting, and Calculus. As for financial means, I am using the GI Bill to go to college; They would cover around $22,000 per year for NYU, and the Yellow Ribbon Program would cover an additional $20,000. The rest I would have to get financial aid/cover out of pocket.
NYU CAS will give you much better opportunties than Baruch, as long as you can afford it (with 42k plus whatever NYU gives you, shouldn't be too bad in terms of loans).
Is it feasible to transfer into Stern from CAS? That would be your best option, but I wouldn't wait another year if you get into CAS this year.
My original plan was to go from Hunter -> CAS -> Stern, but I quickly learned that you cannot internally transfer from CAS to Stern if you are already an external transfer to CAS.
I am not worried about the price tag as much, since the GI Bill will cover the majority of it, and with financial aid covering a bit more. My main concern is simply whether an economics degree will even be considered by most firms (whereas Baruch at least has a finance degree).
Wait STERN lad
don't know if you have to stay in NY for personal reasons but I'd wait and target transfer friendly business programs (stern, johnson, ross, mcintire, KF, marshall, etc)
Unfortunately I am trying to stay within NYC due to personal reasons, otherwise I would have applied to schools all over the US.
