Canadian Target Schools
Are "target schools" even a thing in Canada? For Canadian banks, pensions, PE, etc. What about US IB or PE. Does US acknowledge any Canadian schools are targets? Thoughts?

Yeah
If you have to ask then you don’t go to a target
Canada has schools?
Sorry to hear they took a canadian kid over you
Lol I’m at a Canadian IB, so if anything, Canadians took me over one of theirs
Ivey or queens
But do you think Western's Ivey or Queen's Smith are actually thought of as "target schools", or are they just top reputable business schools in Canada? Do any firms actually target them specifically?
Ivey is a target school for Evercore, Silver Lake, Qatalyst, Ares, CS SF, Leonard Green Partners, GS NY/SF, HL LA, all Canadian banks, all Canada based US banks, Moelis LA, and a handful of others. But keep in mind that with the visa changes, a lot of these firms have scaled back the velocity of hiring at Ivey
And what about UW SAF, UoT Rotman, York Schulich, UBC Sauder, McGill Desautels, etc etc. All top business and finance programs (in addition to Western Ivey and Queens Smith), but are they considered "target schools". Is that even a thing that Canadian shops think of?
Just no to all of those schools. Yes Canada cares more about targets than even the US lol Toronto is dominated by Ivey and Queens. Those are the schools I recommend. Although Ivey >>> Queens.
You have no idea what you’re talking about. No one here gives a shit what school you went to. Just have a good GPA + relevant experience + strong network and you’ll be fine. Yes, Ivey and Queens helps with the latter, but most people will give you the time of day as long as you approach them respectfully
I completely agree with you when it comes to recruiting for Toronto BB and EB, as well as firms like Greenhill, Evercore, and Lazard.
However, it's not as Ivey/Queens dominated in the B5 and Pension funds as it used to be tbh.
Not really. These typical Canadian targets are more so for your BBs and EBs in Toronto, plus some PE firms like Altas. BBs and Pension Funds aren't that hung over Ivey and Queens kids.
Laurier BBA and UW SAF are more or less turning into targets too. Placements have reached very very high levels on Bay Street, especially because they're like the only ones that do off-cycle coops.
While not as prestigious as Ivey, or Queens, don't sleep on UBC for consulting. Dominic Barton's alma mater (former global managing partner at McKinsey). They take around 10 ppl a year for canadian offices (my brother got recruited there).
