Chance me - Deferred Edition
Schools - HBS 2+2, Standard GSB deferred, MIT Sloan Early Admit, Wharton Moelis Program, Booth Scholars
Academics - T50 semi-target state school with full ride scholarship. Will graduate Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude. GPA 3.95. Double major in statistics (BS) and economics (AB).
Test scores - GRE 325 with 166M 159V (converts to a 700-730 GMAT) UPDATED: 3.5/6.0 on the writing portion (37th percentile...) Hoping my strong essays offset this.
Career - EB in highly specialized group after graduation (but only as an intern). Past internships at 2 federal agencies working on hedge funds and private equity fraud as well a junior internship at a large MM IB.
X factor - I have a disability and I have a very good (obviously biased haha) essay about how growing up with a disability shaped in my background, and how I'm able to leverage it to provide unique value and insights. I have volunteer experience in the space and part of my "why deferred" is to help further build out my firms disability affinity network.
Demo - white gay man
Hoping for 2 to 3 interviews and 1 or 2 admits but I really have no idea what to expect. Thoughts on the likelihood of getting an interview? I will update this post for reference once I have heard back.
I am basing this on coaching I have received and info online so take with a grain of salt:
If you have time to retake I would bump the GRE up and your profile will be bulletproof imo.
H/S/W are a crapshoot for anyone but I think your profile is quite strong and likely end up getting a first-round interview at least one of them. Booth is definitely within reach if not a near safety. Maybe consider adding Kellogg to list as well?
Question: is your disability visible? Don't mean this in a bad way but if so your chances of admission definitely increase versus a non-visible disability.
The disability is non-physical, but most likely as part of my interview process (if I get an interview lol) when discussing my background I'll mention it
GMAT would probably help more. I expect schools to really want a 3.95 GPA to have a higher GMAT for rankings. Aim for 730+. Verbal is easy to improve. Quant looks fine at 166/170
I was kind of hoping the opposite. That the high GPA would offset the good, but not anything miraculous standardized testing.
For student programs like 2+2 or deferred enrollment, the M7 schools want insane stats. They are taking a risk accepting a 21-23 year old. I've heard (from friends that got into 2+2) that they really want a high GMAT. Your GPA is fine as is. Anything above 3.8 is very good.
Wait im confused are you insinuating that a 3.95 GPA is somehow weak or not strong enough?
No, it's my understanding that he's saying given the rest of the student profile such as the high GPA, they're going to expect to see a similarly high GMAT
