College transferring
Hey everyone, I am looking into to transferring from my non target 4 year university to a Target school. I was curious based on the stats I post below what colleges do you think I have the best chance at getting accepted into, that also give me a chance at IB.
Age: 25
4 Yrs in the Air Force
Current GPA 3.75 at current college
Previous college around 3
No SAT/ACT
I’d you need any additional info lmk and I can add it in!
What is your cumulative GPA? And how many credits do you have (what year are you?)
That 3.0 at the old college is reallllly going to hurt you unfortunately, unless it was a short stint and doesn't hurt your GPA too badly. Assuming you weren't there for that long and your cumulative GPA is around 3.5, the top targets are all out but I would look into transfer-friendly semi-targets or non-targets with decent presence. The military will help, and you will get some programs/help from other military guys for IB once you start recruiting, but the GPA is a hurdle at the moment.
To throw out some names (you won't get into all of these, just a starting point on themes of schools to look into) - I'd focus on top finance-focused public schools (UGA, UF, Penn State, Baruch, Rutgers) and private schools with higher transfer acceptance rates (Vanderbilt, George Washington, Fordham, SMU). The ivies, top b-schools like Ross or Stern etc are all not likely even for someone with a 4.0, so I would focus your energy on the most realistic paths.
The lower GPA was a really short stint. Maybe a semester worth of classes if that. I believe my cumulative GPA will be somewhere around 3.3-3.4. I am a first semester sophomore right now as well.
Cast a wide net - that GPA is going to make it a bit hard to transfer to a strong school. That said there are some non-targets that place well, just be strategic and look for schools with high transfer acceptance rates compared to their normal application rates
Awesome, thank you for the advice!
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some universities that are known to be transfer-friendly and have a strong presence in investment banking:
Cornell University: Known as the most transfer-friendly Ivy League school, Cornell has a strong presence in banking. Successful applicants typically have GPAs above 3.8 and a solid ACT or SAT score. However, your military experience might be a strong plus in your application.
Indiana University - Bloomington: This university has solid recruiting for finance students in both New York and Chicago. As a transfer, you would need to apply to the business school after a semester or two. Maintaining a certain GPA can lead to automatic acceptance.
University of North Carolina - Kenan Flagler: This university enjoys recruiting from many of the top banks in Charlotte and New York. UNC has a strong alumni base. However, the business students enjoy more OCR opportunities for investment banks than the econ students.
Georgetown University: This university has a 10% acceptance rate and places very well into NYC IB.
University of Southern California: USC has a transfer rate of 25% to its Marshall business program. Each year USC successfully places a good amount of students in banking, mostly in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Remember, these are just suggestions based on the information available. It's always a good idea to reach out to the admissions offices of these universities to get a better understanding of your chances. Good luck with your applications!
