Community Service Ideas

Hey guys. I'm looking for ideas to beef up the community service portion of my resume. Keep in mind that I'm based in Los Angeles.

Key criteria are:

  1. Not a clearly bullsh*t volunteer activity designed to check off the community service aspect of B-school application

  2. Demonstrates leadership and makes an easily definable impact on the community

  3. I'm not applying for a few years, so I'm looking for a volunteer activity that I can be steadily involved in for the next few years

  4. I plan on working in VC or PE after B-school, so a volunteer activity which I could possibly link to these career ambitions in my application essays

  5. Not extremely time intensive - I'm an investment banking analyst after all.

Thanks

I know this has to be done because B-schools want it, but I think it is a total load of crap that people do this just because they have to. B-schools should not even count it because 80 percent of people do it solely for getting into B-school. Great thinking "I am going to help less fortunate people to BENEFIT me". That is not voulanteer experience if you ask me.

At the end of the day whether or not you get something out of helping others is irrelevant from their standpoint. I guess ethically it isn't "correct" but do you think the less fortunate would look down upon you when you are still helping them? I know it seems wrong but come on, they will still thank you and if it's the necessary motivation to get people to help others then so be it.

I mean let's count the amount of people who went and helped others because they thought they would get into B-school and didn't? I guess you'd say it was in vain? don't think so at least not from the point of view of the less fortunate.
