Did I make the wrong decision by committing to CMU Tepper over Michigan Ross? (undergrad)

Because I did not visit either schools, I went with the one closer to home. However, after committing I'm having major buyers remorse. The tuition cost the same too.

I wouldn't worry about it too much as long as you picked CMU for more than the simple reason that it's close to home. At the end of the day, both are strong schools; however, they will give you very different college experiences.

Michigan will give you a more classic college experience, big school, sports, parties, good social scene, as well as solid academics and strong placement into jobs post-grad. It's one of the best public colleges in the US.

CMU is also a great school, but much more of an engineering powerhouse, which I assume you know. CMU is one of the top feeder schools for tech and engineering jobs. Given the quant focused nature of the school, students also place into wall street at a decent clip, but given the nature of the school, there are comparatively fewer that are striving for front office finance. Culturally, the student body tends to be more "nerdy" if you will.

I'm assuming that you did some basic research on each school and decided on CMU because you fit that mold of being slightly more math/science focused and perhaps less interested in tailgating every Saturday than you would joining a robotics club.

At the end of the day, you should go to where you think you would fit best, among other things. Sounds like being close to home was important for you, so if you needed to go to the best school in the greater Pittsburg area, love math and science, and potentially want to pursue a career in engineering or quant focused business(quant finance, data analytics) then you made a great choice. If you were the captain of your sports team in high school, don't really care about being close to home, are looking forward to joining a fraternity, and can't wait to cheer on the wolverines on the weekends, and want to be in brand marketing then yes you probably made a slight error in aligning yourself with the right school on paper.

I don't know if you could switch at this point, you could try, but I have no advice on that. Worst case, you go to CMU for a year and realize you made a mistake. You spend the year buckling down, working hard in all your core classes, and you start filling out transfer applications in Jan. Plenty of people transfer after a year and as long as your grades are good, you'll have options.

Edit: Just saw you're at Tepper, so I'm assuming you were on a more business focused path. My same advice applies, I don't think the decision was necessarily wrong, but the feel of the school will be different, even if you would have been in the business program at both.

Lastly, regardless of whether you come to the conclusion that you made the "right/wrong" decision, go into college with an open mind. I feel like a lot of freshman struggle in the beginning and then end up realizing that things work out for a reason. My parents went to the same college and it was neither of their first choices. I wouldn't be here if they had done things according to their plans. At the end of the day, both are great schools that will give you a solid education and a good brand on the resume, what you make of that is up to you.

Well if you want to go into Tech, Tepper is solid. For everything else, yeah Ross is better, but it doesn't mean you won't have a shot at Tepper.

I don’t think it’s a bad decision. CMU is a well known university reputed for its academics. Since most of the kids are interested in STEM and not business I think it’ll be easier to place on the wall-street relatively due to the small pond big fish analogy. I am sure the alumni network at CMU is very close knit as well so while there may be less CMU people on the street those that are present will be very helpful. you would get a higher value of resources per person at Tepper than at Ross.

Update: wish me luck! after scrolling through WSO for a few hours I decided to email UMichigan again. I'm an extrovert who is trying to go into investment banking so Ross seems like the fit for me. Also, after looking at the curriculum, I like Ross a lot more. Thanks for the advice!
