For undergraduate economics with a focus on breaking into Investment Banking (IB), both Duke and the University of Michigan (UMich) are strong contenders, but they offer different advantages:

  1. Recruitment and Placement:

    • UMich (Ross): UMich has a strong reputation for IB placement, especially through the Ross School of Business. Even for economics majors, the university's robust alumni network and on-campus recruiting presence make it a top choice for IB roles. Some sources even place Ross in the same tier as H/W/S for IB recruitment.
    • Duke: Duke also has excellent placement for IB, with fewer students competing for top roles compared to UMich. Its alumni network is strong, and the school's prestige ensures access to elite boutiques (EBs) and bulge brackets (BBs).
  2. Competition:

    • At UMich, the competition for IB roles can be intense, especially if your son is not in Ross. Clubs and networking play a significant role in breaking into top firms.
    • Duke may offer a slightly less competitive environment, which could be advantageous for standing out during recruitment.
  3. Campus Experience:

    • UMich offers a vibrant campus life with a strong sports culture and a larger student body.
    • Duke provides a more intimate campus experience with a focus on academics and a strong sense of community.
  4. Alumni Network:

    • Both schools have strong alumni networks, but UMich's larger size may provide a broader reach, while Duke's smaller network might offer more personalized connections.

Recommendation: If your son is confident in his ability to network and leverage resources, UMich might provide a slight edge due to its strong IB placement and larger alumni base. However, if he prefers a smaller, more focused environment with less competition, Duke could be the better choice. Both schools are excellent, and success will ultimately depend on how well he utilizes the resources and opportunities available.
