Emlyon Thread - Finance Reputation, Alumni, and More

I am really eager to leverage my exchange semester meet other people and FT professionals in finance out of curiosity to meet new people and potential mentorship and advice. I have accepted a front office 2026 Summer internship in NY so I am not actively recruiting.

I am gonna be on exchange to Emlyon for a semester, and was wondering what you can tell me about the school, its reputation, and placements.

That all made me want to start this thread since I couldn't find much consolidated info all in one place. The Financial Times Placed it 11th among business schools in Europe but I know those types of list can contradict what the word on the street is and reality.

Culture? Does the school have alum in any specific route, sectors or firms more than others? (Ex. IB, S&T, PE, Private Credit, Asset Management etc..). How diversified are alumni to work outside of Paris or France or Europe?

Overall, what would be helpful to know about the school and its professional standing?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about Emlyon and its reputation in finance:

  1. Reputation and Placement:

    • Emlyon is generally considered a strong school in France, particularly for corporate finance. However, it is not as highly regarded as top-tier French schools like HEC, ESSEC, or ESCP.
    • The program is more focused on corporate finance rather than financial markets, which might influence the type of roles alumni typically pursue.
    • Placement tends to be stronger within France, especially in Paris, and less diversified internationally compared to schools like LBS or LSE.
  2. Alumni Network:

    • The alumni network is more concentrated in France, with fewer graduates working in international finance hubs like London or New York compared to other European schools.
    • Alumni are present in various sectors, but the school does not have a dominant reputation in IB, PE, or other highly competitive finance roles. It is more common to see alumni in corporate finance or mid-tier roles.
  3. Culture and Exchange Opportunities:

    • Emlyon is known for its entrepreneurial culture and practical approach to education. The exchange semester could be a great opportunity to network and meet professionals, especially if you leverage the school's connections in France.
    • The larger cohorts and exchange programs might provide some exposure to international opportunities, but the school’s strength remains within the French market.
  4. Word on the Street:

    • While the Financial Times ranks Emlyon highly among European business schools, rankings can sometimes be misleading. The general consensus on WSO is that Emlyon is a solid school but not in the same league as the top-tier institutions for finance placements.
  5. Key Takeaways:

    • If your goal is to network and gain mentorship, focus on connecting with alumni and professionals in Paris, as this is where the school’s influence is strongest.
    • For roles outside of France or Europe, you might face more challenges compared to graduates from schools with a stronger international reputation.

If you're looking to maximize your exchange semester, consider attending networking events, reaching out to alumni, and exploring opportunities in Paris to make the most of Emlyon’s strengths.
