Emory vs. UT Austin

Hi everyone,

I’ve been fortunate enough to be admitted to both Emory University (Goizueta Business School) and UT Austin (McCombs School of Business) for undergrad, and I’m trying to weigh my options in terms of prestige and placement into NYC investment banking (tuition is not a factor).

  1. Prestige: I know Emory has a strong reputation in the business world, particularly in the southeast, but how does it compare to UT Austin in terms of national prestige, particularly when aiming for a career in investment banking in NYC? Does UT Austin have more of a national presence, or would Emory’s stronger focus on business education give me an edge in terms of long-term career opportunities?

  2. Placement into NYC IB: From what I’ve read, both schools have solid recruiting ties with top banks, but where will I have an easier time breaking into NYC investment banking?

For those who have insights or personal experiences with recruiting, could you share how Emory compares to UT Austin in terms of NYC IB placements, and which one might give me an overall better shot?

Thanks in advance!

Controversial

Emory. Both Emory and UT Austin are semi-target schools for NY. Recruiting would be easier at Emory (fewer undergrads and people interested in IB). Emory is also ranked higher. Why not choose a university with a higher ranking?

Emorys more prestigious because it's more prestigious, being private has nothing to do with it. UT is more prestigious than Tulane.

I go to Emory and have friends at UT. Just go where you think you will have the most fun. Both schools are semi-targets for NYC and if you put in the effort, nothing is stopping you from placing at either school. I’d say it’s prob a bit easier from Emory just bc the student body is smaller and more “focused” on IB overall - whereas at UT you’d really need to get into the top programs and stand out. However UT is definitely a more well-rounded college experience with big sports, school spirit, etc.

Don't you have to go to Emory? I'm assuming that anyone who has been admitted to Emory at this point in the year has been admitted ED1. So why is this even a question? They're very different schools and hard to truly compare. Honestly, if you're willing to dishonor the ED contract then I would just wait for RD decisions to come out and see if you get into any Ivy+ schools or whatever and then renege on Emory. It's not the most ethical thing but I don't think there are any real consequences for the most part. I honestly wouldn't pay much attention to this comparison if you're bound to an Emory ED admit

if you are an instate student, UT no doubt. if your already on this forum in high school, you will succeed wherever you go, just work hard, join orgs, etc etc. so u might as well save $, and get a better experience imo. can’t go wrong with either though, good luck!

You're overthinking it. From what I've seen the Longhorn network runs deep and good alumni base to have. Kids I know from UT absolutely loved it... at the end of the day it's a sports/party school that somehow does quite solid in IB placement (and its presence is only growing).

If you don't like the South / big State School vibes, go Emory. Otherwise McCombs does well

Congrats! If you can swing into the business honors program or are in-state at Texas it's a no-brainer. Have worked with several McCombs alum and they have nothing but great things to say. Get your liver checked.

I only know one Emory grad in business (my high school sent a few people there, all for pre-med/biotech) so can't comment.
