Finance MBA at NYU

I am currently in my last year of undergrad at small state school graduating with a 2.2 gpa in economics. I am planning on getting my mba in finance preferably from NYU or better after I work for a couple years and attain my CFA. If I crush the GMAT do I have a shot at being accepted?

Sure. HSW and similar take students from all different industries, but they take the best from those industries. So, if you're a management consultant, you need to be at MBB or close. If you're a banker, you need to be at BB or close. And so on. But if you are a consultant/banker in a boutique of 5-10 people, you have no chance. That is what I meant. And because OP seems like somebody who wants to take a consulting/banking path, I specified that he needs big names, but he will most probably be unable to get them because of his profile.

I know couple of dudes from my company's sales team who got into NYU stern mba this year. One of them is headed to Duke MBA next year. I don't know their exact background or college gpa, but I'd assume their credentials are nothing extraordinary. From my limited interaction with those guys, they seemed to be of very average intellect. However, both these guys are very slick, polished, and quite driven.

With your gpa, only reasonable career option maybe in some sort of sales capacity, or some back office function at a mediocre firm. Wherever you end up, I'd say you need to get promoted couple of times, work on presentation skills / salesmanship, and demonstrate some sort of leadership. good luck
