GMAT Prep Advice

I took GMAT Focus mock #1 to get a sense of my level. I scored a 675 (Q: 81, VR: 85, DI: 84). Would you guys recommend sticking with the GMAT and prepping quant (I feel like I'll be able to improve substantially) or does this suggest I'm better suited for the GRE (my concern is my logical reasoning is probably a lot stronger than vocab, which the GRE focuses on). What I'm really asking is if it's possible to get my Q up to a higher precentile with enough prep.

Also, does GMAT Focus vs GMAT matter?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know:

  1. Improving Quant on the GMAT:

    • It’s absolutely possible to improve your Quant score with focused preparation. Many users have shared that pinpointing weaknesses and consistent practice can lead to significant gains. For example:
      • Use resources like the Manhattan GMAT guides for foundational concepts.
      • Consider Jeff Sackman’s materials for advanced Quant practice.
      • Keep a spreadsheet of the problems you get wrong, analyze why, and focus on those areas.
      • Practice data sufficiency questions extensively, as they tend to trip up many test-takers.
  2. GMAT vs GRE:

    • If you feel confident in logical reasoning but weaker in vocabulary, the GMAT might be a better fit. The GRE Verbal section leans heavily on vocabulary, while the GMAT focuses more on critical reasoning and sentence correction.
    • However, some users have noted that GRE Quant is easier than GMAT Quant. If Quant is your main concern and you’re open to switching, the GRE could be worth exploring. Take a GRE practice test to compare your performance.
  3. GMAT Focus vs GMAT:

    • The GMAT Focus Edition is a newer format, but the core skills tested remain the same. If you’re already preparing with GMAT Focus mocks, stick with it. The strategies and preparation for improving Quant and Verbal apply to both versions.
  4. Next Steps:

    • If you’re aiming for a higher Quant percentile, focus on consistent, targeted practice. Many users have shared that Quant improvement is more about strategy and pattern recognition than raw math skills.
    • If you’re still unsure, take a GRE practice test to see how you perform. Some users have found they naturally score higher on the GRE, especially in Quant.

Ultimately, both tests are valid for business school applications, and the choice should align with your strengths and target programs.
