Have chance to study abroad at oxford/LSE as a nontarget. however, theres a small issue
Title above. The issue is that oxford doesn't get out of school until mid-June or early July. and I know that SA starts early june. How would this logistically work? Has anyone done this before?
Most internships start mid-June, so probably right after your course ends. On the other hand, check if the July date is just a general date and not specific to your course. I'm pretty sure places like Oxford/LSE are aware of the starting dates of the SAs and have probably set their final exams earliers than these dates. Anyway, contacting previous students/careers centers is your best bet
can confirm that LSE at least is aware of this and has made accommodations in past, not sure about Oxford but would imagine it is similar. i was told explicitly this has been a situation they have dealt with many times before and it generally gets worked out
LSE at least will not let you take an exam early but there are US testing centers that are approved by them e.g. Hunter College in NYC.
Your options may vary based on where your internship is, which school you’re at, the program, how the study abroad experience is facilitated, etc. I’d probably reach out to your home school’s study abroad office ASAP.
I’m in a similar boat to you in that I have an internship next summer but am studying abroad in the UK this upcoming year. I specifically chose a one-semester option for the fall just to be safe — indeed, it might be too late to do that, but still something to perhaps look into.
Considering there are 100s of Oxbridge students on SAs every year, I think you'll be fine.
had this exact problem; emailed the bank i have signed with and explained the situation and they indicated they would support me being able to take the exam at one of the US testing centers if/when an exam conflicted with my start date. this happens all the time (almost unavoidable if on the quarter system) and banks understand it.
if i were you i would email your bank ASAP and explain the situation; i was worried too but this is apparently quite a common situation and most study abroad programs are aware of this and accomodate as such. plenty of US kids do SA's as well as study abroad at a school in England, just look at LinkedIn.
I was at Oxford -- usually the study abroad students don't have to deal with the difficult/ rigorous exams (or any 'official' exams at all for that matter). Indeed, for us Finals are a defining part of the degree (your entire degree hinges on 8 exams at the end of your third year, each 3 hours to write 3 essays usually. You get dressed up and its in a cool building and all of that too) -- but the same can't be said for study abroad students. Any exams are just for 'decoration' and they won't be official Oxford exams (i.e. you will not be doing them dressed in Sub-Fusc in the Exam Schools).
Exceptions to this are the very formal exchange programs like the Oxford-Princeton Physics program (that has exams of similar difficulty to Oxford's own)
Some of the more poorly organised exchange programs even had tutorials that were hosted only for exchange students.... some programs are better at actually "integrating" you into college life than others. Both academically and in terms of dining privileges and so on. Hopefully yor program is good for this too -- if not, try to make friends with people at colleges to get invites to college events and dinners.
It's likely the SA program start date will be just after the end of the Oxford term anyway (although maybe US offices start dates are a little earlier than London ones).
Anyway, it's a great place to study/ spend a year - take advantage of formals and the tutorial system if you do go!
No way you nerds dressed up in formal wear for an exam lmao
