HBS ($) GSB ($) or Wharton ($$)
Hi All,
I’m in the fortunate position of receiving admits to HSW. Don’t bother with comments of MBA not being worth it - I’m committed to going. Curious to hear opinions on each. Long term goal is to pivot into global entertainment / consumer from tech IB/VC. My thoughts below:
HBS: - worldwide recognition - proximity to NYC - large alum network - education (actually a big fan of the case method..)
GSB: - most “prestigious” (from an exclusivity standpoint) - proximity to LA / Asia - alum more likely to bat for you - guest speakers are top tier (Jensen etc.)
Wharton: - closest to NYC - most “social” (also thinking about the 2 year vacation as a big plus) - known for consumer expertise
I come from a state school so brand boost is very helpful. Leaning towards GSB but still very on the fence. Definitely not returning to IB or (most likely) PE so focus will be going corporate / entrepreneurial route (entre. less likely but still a consideration).
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a breakdown of your options considering your goals and preferences:
HBS (Harvard Business School):
GSB (Stanford Graduate School of Business):
Wharton:
Recommendation:
Given your goals of pivoting into global entertainment/consumer industries and your interest in potentially exploring entrepreneurship, GSB seems like the best fit. Its proximity to LA and Asia, combined with its entrepreneurial culture and strong alumni support, aligns well with your aspirations. However, if global brand recognition and proximity to NYC are more critical, HBS would be a strong contender. Wharton, while excellent, seems slightly less aligned with your stated goals unless the financial aspect is a significant deciding factor.
If you’re still on the fence, consider: 1. Visiting the campuses (if possible) to get a feel for the culture and fit. 2. Reaching out to alumni in your target industries to understand how each school has supported their career transitions. 3. Evaluating the long-term ROI of the scholarship at Wharton versus the potential network and prestige benefits of HBS/GSB.
Good luck with your decision!

If you're thinking on the entrepreneurial side, GSB is your best choice
I would also go GSB since your background is tech and most logical global entertainment / consumer will be tech adjacent or tech enabled based on your background
