HEC Paris MIF – Capital Markets or Corporate Finance for ER?
Hello everyone, I am currently looking to apply to the HEC Paris Master in International Finance, and was wondering which specialization I should choose, Corporate Finance or Capital Markets.
After the master’s, my goal would be to work in Equity Research, either in an Investment Bank or an Asset Management firm.
I would like to know which specialization seems more suitable for my goals, and if any you know about the trajectory of HEC Paris students who went into ER and the specialization they chose.
For a career in Equity Research (ER), the Capital Markets specialization in the HEC Paris Master in International Finance (MIF) is generally the more suitable choice. Here's why:
Relevance to Equity Research:
ER requires a strong understanding of financial markets, valuation techniques, and investment analysis. The Capital Markets track focuses on these areas, offering courses that align closely with the skills needed for ER, such as financial modeling, equity valuation, and market analysis.
Skillset Alignment:
The Capital Markets specialization emphasizes technical and analytical skills, which are critical for analyzing stocks, industries, and market trends—core responsibilities in ER. Corporate Finance, on the other hand, leans more toward M&A, restructuring, and internal financial management, which are less directly relevant to ER.
Placement Trends:
Based on the most helpful WSO content, HEC Paris has a strong track record of placing students into ER roles, particularly those who pursue the Capital Markets track. Alumni often secure positions in top-tier investment banks and asset management firms, leveraging the program's reputation and network.
Networking Opportunities:
The Capital Markets track may also provide better networking opportunities with professionals in ER and Asset Management, as these fields are more closely tied to market-focused roles.
Additional Advice:
In summary, the Capital Markets specialization is the optimal choice for your goal of working in Equity Research. It aligns better with the technical and market-focused skills required for the role and has a proven track record of success for HEC Paris graduates entering this field.

Hi,
Feel free to DM for more info, but would recommend capital markets. You'll get the basics of corporate valuation, but you won't have deep focus on things like LBOs/PE/VC that you would have in corp fin.
Did Capital markets, now work in AM ER.
