IE Business school

Hi!

I have been admitted to the dual degree in the Bachelor of business Administration and Bachelor of Law at ie business school.

I was now wondering how good my chance are of getting recruit after my bachelor into consulting or ib. I am still unsure a Madrid is not the main finance capital, but the ranking of ie is very good. What do you think ?

thanks for your answers in advance!

Thank you for your response !

at least I have received a scholarship pushing the costs down to about the same as Bocconi, which is the reason why I am considering it especially because of the sick campus and nice dual degree.

Nothing against the school but can you imagine that even with a scholarship you are paying almost the price of Bocconi (which is already quite expensive). Who do they think are and especially why do they consider students cash cows? Shame on them on that point but apart from that great campus and an interesting double degree, just think it is way way way overpriced and I would go to Bocconi or LSE for that price (even if it is a bit more expensive).

I wouldn't say way better but would say better. Well, tbh not sure doing a double degree law/business will give you an advantage for a standard consulting career (say MBB) but it can help you if you later want to work as a lawyer (it's a huge advantage as it will avoid having to start from year one afterwards). Hope it helps :)

I have applied to ie, esade and escp and Copenhagen business school. I didn’t apply to any UK schools because the entry requirements are very high.

I have also been admitted to ie (BBA and Law), Esade (BBA), Escp (Bachelor in Management).

I speak English and German, both as a mother tongue. It’s my dream to be able to work in consulting after my bachelor (bcg, Accenture, Mckinsey)

Ok so point one is i am not in IB or Consulting but i think i've got a fairly solid grip on the industry and recruitment. Point two is realizing that unlike in the US, 90% of people in Europe don't get into "high finance" after just a bachelor degree, and because of that you dont necessarily have to go into a target school for undergrad, of course its helpful but its not a deal breaker. So there's no point now thinking "should i have gone to LSE or Bocconi". I'm telling you this just so you dont get worried in case you dont place. However i am also telling you this to let you know you're going to very likely have to plan on geting a master's degree, so if money is an issue you need to think ahead here.

These are all very good schools to go for undergrad. I know of kids who got into MS/UBS/BAML out of IE undergrad so its definitely doable but you have to realize that not only are you competing with fellow bachelors students, you're also competing with Master's students for the same Summer Analyst and Off-cycle spots and quite frankly, why would MS/UBS/BAML take you (you plural) for their SA class over a Master's student with maybe a couple internships under their belt and two degrees? This isn't to dissuade you, but simply to get you to realize that kids who land a job out of undergrad are the exception rather than the rule (this is different in the UK but no point getting into that here). Due to this, i wouldn't worry about Madrid/Barcelona/Copenhagan not being huge financial markets. Quite frankly if you don't speak Spanish its very unlikely you find an internship there and you'll be applying to London or Frankfurt/Zurich for your internships anyway so focus on grades and some extracurriculars (clubs, competitive sports, case study competitions etc) to pad your CV and then apply to bigger cities for internships.

From my perspective I would rank these offers in the following way (note, this is for you, i don't rank these schools in this order for everyone):

ESCP
I think its close between ESCP and IE but ESCP gets the nod here for a simple reason; there's the option to go to London. I forget the number of campuses ESCP lets you go to but if i were you i'd plan on spending as long as you can in London and angle it towards the end of the program so you can network locally for internships and Grad school interviews. If you want to go to live in London then there's nothing like local networking. If you're German probaby also helpful to do some time in Berlin to start (maybe easier to get an informal type of internship there to add to the CV). You need to play to your strengths here, ESCP also has a Madrid campus no? if you really want to be in spain you can do so through ESCP.

IE
Double Bachelor that helps you stand out a bit is great, Madrid is an awesome city and i know they can place well. If you decide you want to get a MIM or MIF there too you're basically a shoe in. Cons is its prob the most expensive of the 4 so if money is an issue keep that in consideration. IE is also very international which is why i think a better fit than ESADE.

Esade
ESADE is fairly international but not as much as IE imho. Double check on Linkedin but i feel like most people who land in the industry from Esade are Spanish speakers so you'd be at a disadvantage.

CBS
Unclear to me if you are still waiting on an answer here or if you were rejected. Either way while i think its definitely a good school not sure it has a leg up on any of the alternatives given your characterstics

Good luck

My wife used to work for IE

It’s a very good school, but there placements outside of the EU are horrible

It’s a solid school if you want to work in Europe. Literally horrible if you want the US. I know everyone there from recruitment to placement on the US side. It’s bad

That said, for Europe it’s a top 10ish school. So a super different experience

IE is good, as is ESADE. I was under the impression they're roughly the same ranking so maybe go with the cheaper one which is ESADE. CBS is also good but it seems like you're set on Spain. Like others have said securing internships in Spain, and Southern Europe in general, as a foreigner is really tough so off cycles will be hard and you'll probably have to find something in Germany. You'll probably have to get a masters anyway so keep that in mind. Any reason why you didn't apply to the German targets as well as St Gallen?

Because of my scholarship, I would pay less at ie compared to esade. I didn’t consider any other university in Germany because I definitely wanted to study abroad. Besides the ones I applied, I also considered HSG and Bocconi. Decide myself to not apply because it was to late to write the HSG test in February so I would have to had written it in July, where it is much harder to be accepted and in addition I didn’t want to do that after my finals. I kind of regret of not having applied to bocconi, but I am also very interest in business and law companies such as Baker Mckenzie and at ie (because the dual degree) I think I would have the best chances.

I currently work in an EB in Madrid and have c. 4y of banking experience in this city: I have never come across an undergraduate from IE. You can definitely break into top banking and consulting from undergrad IE, as I know people from schools with worst reputation that have done it. Still, IE placement into these industries is far lower than CUNEF or IEB. Overall, IEs undergrad and MBA are regarded as full of rich kids that only had to pay to get in. IEs master in finance has good reputation though.

Thank you for the information! But IE’s MBA is one the best ranked programmes in Europe. Additionally, based on linkedin stats, IE places a lot of students in top consultings firms. (MBB, BIG4) I personally think that consulting does seem a bit more interesting for me at the moment and IE seems to have a, at least, very decent placement in that industry.

I thought ICADE and ESADE were the best targets for ug?

I am Spanish and have gone recently through lots of IB recruiting processes. I am very surprised that ICADE, which is Madrid's biggest target school (and ranked well above CUNEF, IE and IEB) hasn't really been mentioned. Within Spain, ICADE and ESADE are the ones with better placement by far and both offer similar opportunities for Consulting and IB. IE, however, would be classified in a second tier with CUNEF. However, please note that, in academic terms, ICADE and ESADE will be much more challenging than IE or CUNEF
