Importance of Study Abroad GPA
Do marks from a study abroad term carry the same weight as those from your home school?
I have a GPA >3.5 but rough marks on my exchange transcript (which do not show up on my official transcript), will these marks be valued equally by adcom?
Would a strong GMAT overcome this issue?
None. I hope you had fun and enjoyed your exchange. My GPA was 2.3 during the year I spent as an exchange student in the U.S. It does not appear on my official transcript from my European school. For my applications I just explained in a text box (they always have one in the education section to add some comments (e.g. scholarships, awards, etc.) that all the courses I took were on a pass/fail basis and don't appear on my transcript.
Yep.. It only matters in terms of what your university counts it as (and I think most do Pass/Fail, but some include the grades). So it shouldn't matter overmuch (is that even a word?)

Hey everyone,
I want to go into competitive positions let's say either in IB, Consulting - and I am also interested in applying to top masters. (Not necessarily Business schools per se, sorry for posting in this section but couldn't find a more appropriate one)
I am on a study abroad year right now, and my grades do not count towards my GPA. Regardless, I know every firm/school will still look at my transcript from my study abroad year.
What GPA would you say be acceptable/fine in this case for the study abroad year? Do you think firms/schools will ding me due to having one C or even a D this year - if otherwise I have a good GPA for my degree overall?

Usually it's hard to explain a bad grade so I would avoid CS and Ds. Other than that I think if it doesn't count towards your GPA it doesn't matter that much because recruiters ask for your school's transcript.

I studied at Cambridge and went to a MIT on exchange for my 3rd year. While my transcript from Cambridge does not record any marks for the 3rd year abroad, I did have a GPA etc. and I suppose it may be possible for a business school to request this.
My grades at Cambridge were good (I got a 1st in my first and second year, and my academic tutor would be happy to write a letter that I got a 1st overall - there is no overall degree classification). However, my GPA for the year abroad was 4.4/5 - I took some hard classes without really knowing the required standard, and also took a few too many technical classes. Also I probably relaxed a bit. My question is - will an adcom request my year abroad grades - and if so, how will this GPA be viewed?
Additionally, for my Masters at Cambridge, I got a Merit (on a scale of pass/merit/distinction) - but was just 2 marks off a distinction (though I'm not sure there would be room to mention this anywhere).
Considering only my academic history, how would I fare for H/S/W (leaving aside work experience/extracurriculars/GMAT)? Have I severely disadvantaged myself with this average year-abroad GPA and Masters result?

*My school takes transfer credit only, study abroad doesn't count toward GPA.
It does not count for your GPA so you would be lying. Also, very few places ask for transcripts from study abroad, so when they see your school GPA does not match the one you listed on your resume, they could ding you and they would be 100% in the right.....I have never heard of a school that allows grades from study abroad to count.
I'll assume you split the 2 schools up in your Education section for your CV. I'm also assuming you did quite well while on exchange. Put the cGPA you received under each school, but I would not blend the two.

What is more beneficial, studying abroad or raising one's GPA from 3.4 to 3.5 during that semester before SA?
Also at what stage do they ask for transcripts for summer analyst positions. before work? during the interview process (r1, superday), when they give you the offer?

3.5 does seem to be a key level so that is something to think about. What you should be more worried about is that most firms interview in Spring semester for SA and it could be tough for you to get accelerated interviews if you go to a non-target---you'll get some, but you are definitely putting yourself on a time table if you don't get an offer. I ahve a friend that had a very difficult time finding interviews when he went abroad in the Spring of junior year.
Usually firms ask for them after the offer is given, although some smaller firms ask for them before they even give you an interview.

I dont think they will care but you are lying and that is unethical. You should have added another section on your resume stating you studied abroad and got X GPA. Why would you average your GPA even though you did not get a 3.48 GPA at your current school, seriously ridiculous and who ever advised you on this is foolish. I hope they call you out and rescind your offer.
Those are credits (with the grades) I can transfer back to my home university, and I actually stated that I studied abroad under the section of my home university.

Hi - I am on doing an exchange semester in Asia, currently go to school in North America. My grades at my school in Asia are on a pass/fail basis. I was wondering when applying for post grad school (MBA) if schools will ask for my transcript while on exchange (the actual % grades) or would my transcript from my school in North America which would show my courses while on exchange as a pass/fail basis be sufficient?
