Incoming T1 MiM (2026) – 1.5y F500 Corp Finance – What’s the smartest move before school?
Hi everyone,
Looking for some pragmatic advice on pre-master’s positioning.
Background
- 1.5 years in a Fortune 500 corporate finance rotational role (FP&A / commercial finance / capital analysis)
- Prior internships in capital investment / fintech
- Recently admitted to a Tier-1 business school (MiM starting Fall 2026)
- Long-term target: strategy consulting (MBB/T1.5) or high finance (IB/VC/PE-adjacent)
I left my F500 role intentionally to reposition toward these paths.
The dilemma
I have ~7–8 months before starting the MiM. I’m debating between:
- Joining a consulting / finance role now (boutique consulting, VC, advisory, etc.)
- Staying uncommitted and using the time for targeted prep (cases, modeling, networking, CFA, etc.)
- Trying to leverage the business school admission to break into a better-branded role now
My concern with option #3 is obvious:
- Will firms even want to hire someone who is leaving for school in under a year?
- Does signaling the admission help (prestige) or hurt (short tenure risk)?
On the other hand, staying idle until school feels like wasted optionality if there’s a way to add real signal.
Key questions
- Is it realistic to use a top MiM admission to land a high-signal pre-school role, or do firms discount candidates who are leaving soon?
- From a recruiter’s perspective, is short consulting/finance experience pre-MiM a net positive or neutral at best?
What maximizes ROI here:
- Any job > no job?
- Only take something if it’s strong brand / deal exposure?
- Focus entirely on recruiting prep and networking for on-campus roles?
I’m trying to avoid moves that look like “lateral churn” while still upgrading my profile before on-campus recruiting.
Would appreciate thoughts from anyone who’s done:
- Pre-MBA / pre-MiM transitions
- Consulting → school → consulting
- Corp finance → IB/consulting via business school
Thanks in advance.
