Is BSchool Worth It?

Hi All,

I'm wondering if an MBA is worth getting in my situation -- I have strong ties to one of the top 10 since I've done charitable work for their business school:

  • I have a background in quant/startups/corporate finance.
  • I am an FRM and CFA L3 Candidate.
  • I am enrolled in a MS in CS (Quantum Computing) and plan on pursuing a PhD in either that or electrical engineering. Undergrad was in Applied Math/Econ.

My goal is to take better technologies to market. There are large market holes in quantum science and electrical systems that would make people's lives better.

I'm questioning the MBA since until recently I was headed that direction. I've also been questioning the value since day one since I'm not sure how much I'd learn in an MBA program after finishing up the CFA/FRM programs among other things.

I would say I start off very suspect of MBA programs.  The cost is astronomical (tuition alone), excluding living costs, and excluding opportunity cost.  I really think it only makes sense for people who are either i) trying to do a hard pivot in their career or ii) people who are getting it paid by their employer.  I really struggle with any other justification given the upfront cost, particularly outside of the top 10-15 programs.

To your specific question, however, I would say -- look at the placement records and speak to alumni.  If there's an easy path to the job you want (and it pays $$$), maybe it's worth it

If no one has even gone down the path you're considering, then maybe look at something else
