Is Georgetown Prestigious?

I get Georgetown has good placement, but when you think of it do you actually think "good school" or ivy equivalent. Is it elite? Would you be impressed if your kid went there / you found out someone did? Or is it just kind of mid but passes the mark like a USC / Stern.

I go to Georgetown and it’s pretty good. There’s a weird mix of government/IR people finance people and just normal general body. But I have friends at usc and stern and Georgetown sounds a lot better. It’s an amazing location and is at the top of where it is so when you got parties all the American/gw/ like 5 other schools always want you. It’s your choice but Georgetown in my opinion is the best by a lot.

yeah for sure - it's not just a finance hardo environment. the school is also great for politics and pre-law, counts bill clinton and jon ossoff among alumni, and has been taking steps to strengthen its STEM programs. from what i hear, they've hired a bunch of new cs profs, getting a new medical building, and didn't dr. anthony fauci join the faculty?

i also know that evercore hires heavily out of georgetown as their founder, roger altman, is georgetown class of 1967 and there's an insane georgetown alumni base at the firm.

personally, i would take it over stern / usc, although usc will probably be the most fun socially out of the 3.

I like Stern the best and think NYC would be the most fun.

From personal experience, alumni network is strong. Of course, some value the alumni bond more than others, but in general it's an amazing resource.

Freshman here and love it. Have a bunch of Stern friends and so many people there are gunning for IB that you're endlessly competing and it's a difficult environment. At Georgetown, the competition is more chill and there are so many non hardos because not everybody is going for IB (Consulting, IR, Law, Med, CS, etc). The diversity of people makes the school interesting and this is combined with the fact that we place pretty well even if you aren't in clubs. Being in some of the top clubs also helps but it really isn't that deep.  Finally, don't know how important this is to you but all the alumni I've reached out to have been extremely kind and helpful.

This is all to say, I would think that GU is a step below the Ivys but is in the similar range of Stern/Ross/maybe Cornell of like the general T20s. Step above USC imo.

Alum here. Great school, I'd definitely consider it prestigious. Very few schools have a blend between great academics, location, solid social scene, D1 sports (when I was there the basketball was huge, but now they aren't great), and not being too leftist.

And as other commenters said, people aren't divided based on their major, so you'll be friends with people in a wide array of stuff (My friends are doctors, lawyers, high-finance professionals, political activists on both sides, etc).

Georgetown is elite because it is where the political and financial elite send their children. It will never be an HYPSM, but this trait will continue to anchor it in an asymmetrical position of importance relative to its actual academic offerings. You think MIT, you think STEM. You think Georgetown, you think politics. It is that simple.
