Is Restructuring At A Top Firm Doable Out of MBA?

Friend has strong gpa, interesting EC's,  very solid GMAT. But works in a function that has nothing to do with finance (Product at an F100 tech co). -- I'm in Cap Markets, not restructuring so I don't have great advice.

I believe based on a variety of factors that he will get into a top 10 MBA program.

Granted he gets into a top 10 program, Would he be able to land restructuring banking at a top shop without pre-finance experience? What kinds of people land restructuring out of MBA programs?

I would say it's pretty difficult to get into restructuring from summer associate position. In general, summer associate classes at boutiques have fewer seats and even fewer are dedicated to RX (though there are still dedicated seats). At the bank I exited from, the most common background for MBA associates in RX was IB, followed by turnaround consulting, government jobs, and one or two law students. From what I could tell, having an interesting story and networking (a lot of internal referrals) seemed to play the biggest role in determining luck in recruiting, so anything is possible. That being said, I probably wouldn't recommend only shooting for that if you don't have finance experience since the learning curve is different.
