Is Tufts a Semi-Target?

Hi guys. I am a high school senior right now and I've been rejected to all of my target/semi-target schools, except a waitlist at Cornell's School of Hotel Administration. I may get into Cornell as a guaranteed transfer for sophmore year though.

However, I also got into Tufts. Is it worth going to Tufts, or should I go to a local state university for free and try to transfer into more of a target school? Thanks.

what were your SATs? unless they were good, you have a far better chance of transferring out of tufts than a CC esp if you're in a state without too many good undergraduate institutions

you'd rather study hotels than do a proper degree? seems fishy man

.

I appreciate the input but Hotel Administration @ Cornell is an accredited institution by the AACSB and has OCR from many real estate firms, Big 4 firms, and BBs. There are several finance classes within the hotel school. Check the postgraduate employment reports yourself. https://www.hotelschool.cornell.edu/students/careers/postgrad.html

Also, I would be attending my state flagship ranked in the 80s, not a CC.

I got a 1450/1600 on my SAT. They are okay, not in the range for most target schools.

No need to talk trash on Cornell's Hotel Administration program. It's actually pretty damn good.

I would put Tufts more toward non-target than semi-target, but the school itself is prestigious. What you should do largely depends on your goals. If you have to take on huge debt and plan to transfer out anyways, don't bother with Tufts. Otherwise, if you plan to stay the course at Tufts, and the debt load isn't too bad, go there. If you hustle and work hard, you have a solid chance of getting somewhere from there.

Tufts is essentially a non-target in that BB banks/MBB don't actively recruit from there. That being said it is decently prestigious with some strong alumni (Jamie Dimon standing being the prime example). If you want Wall Street you can get there from Somerville but more of your peers will be interested in "Saving the world" than figuring out how to get into xyz bank.

How good is the Local State School? They vary a lot in quality but are likely to be significantly cheaper than Tufts.

@ebbitten Thanks for the reply. I actually have a close to full ride from Tufts because of my low income status.

My local state uni is SUNY Stony Brook, which is pretty awful compared to UVA or UCs. It's pretty non-target as all the SUNYs are.

I guess it's better to transfer out of Tufts?

If Tufts is free I'd go there without a doubt. From there you can either transfer to essentially anywhere or network your way into a job and enjoy having a joke econ department.

both are fine.

if you say Intl relations, Tufts Fletcher is a nice place. However, it is obvious that Tufts is a smaller brand within the general Boston area. MIT/Harvard/BU/BC/Northeastern are also in the scene with UMass schools, etc.

I suggest getting that strong entry GPA (near 4.0), and apply to a few places for transfer right away---if you cannot decide right now, it's still better to apply transfers & have the options to decide later.

Quant econ at Tufts is a very respected major, and if you do well there, it will open doors. Having said that, I agree that it's not a premiere brand for entry into finance, so if you do well freshman year, certainly apply for transfer to harvard, yale, penn, columbia, dartmouth, duke, stanford. Be warned though: transfer acceptance rates are even lower than regular admissions, so don't be disappointed if you don't get in. Go in with the mindset that you will do well at Tufts, enjoy it, and make the most of the opportunities. If you get into a better school as a transfer, so be it.

I have seen many people successfully transfer, so yes, you should try to do it. Aside from the schools mentioned in the above two posts, you can also look at Vanderbilt, Georgetown, UVA, Michigan, NYU, and UNC.

Definitely go for it. You will be significantly happier at a more prestigious school and have more access to great opportunities. Tufts is a solid school, don't get me wrong, but do you want to spend 4 years in the shadow of Harvard and MIT and have a huge inferiority complex?
