Looking for Advice on Business School Choices
I am looking for advice on what business schools I can target. I'm open to both part-time and full-time but am leaning towards part-time since it may give me a better shot at getting into a good program.
I've passed the first and second levels of the CFA exam and am confident I will pass the third level this June. gmat score is 750+. Have internship and one year of experience at Wealth Management of Morgan Stanley and will have 2-3 more years of experience at a non-prof investment education firm by the time I apply. Came from a bad UG and have a masters from low-end graduate school. GPA is 3.9 for masters. Schools are bad because I was an awful student when younger (simply didn't care). Should have good recommendations and am a good interviewer.
Thanks to anyone who can give their insight!
What do you want to do?
Much of the admission process is focused on your story - i.e. what you want to do and how that specific school is going to help you accomplish this.
The more your story resonates with the school's focus, the better your chances. For example, if you want to start a business, it may be effective to target mid-ranked schools that are known for their entrepreneurial programs (Babson, Ross, Darden, BYU, etc.).
I'm got my BA in '08, so there are a bunch of people on WSO that can give you better advice on MBA programs than I can. However, you'll get better advice if you share what you're trying to do post-MBA.
I have two or three career choices in mind which is why I didn't bother listing them. For the most part, I have a good understanding of the top schools and their strengths.
I just wanted an idea of the types of schools for which I can realistically aim.
Thanks again.
Double.
The more information you can give them, the more they can help you (including what you want to get into). If you're just looking for the best business school, start applying to all of them and maybe you'll get lucky with one.
Basically, what your post boils down to is this: 3.9 GPA, 750+ GMAT. Wealth Management experience. That doesn't really provide a clear picture. Your stats alone would lead anyone to believe you have a 'shot' at H/S/W but the wealth management will hurt you (even with the big name) as there aren't 'hard' skills associated with it. Where do you want your MBA to take you, what region, etc. All of that will help people give you better advice.
Hi WindyCity,
I second all the above comments - you haven't provided enough information for anyone to give you realistic and sensible advice. But for starters, what I can recommend is that you check out the BusinessBecause website (www.businessbecause.com) to get some general idea. It is a networking website for business students, and would give you a good hang of what is available, and would help you get in touch with current students and get their inputs on the courses they are doing. Through that hopefully you should be able to figure out what exactly you're looking for! Good luck!
