MBA from low tier school vs Masters from Georgetown

To give a bit of background, I earned my Bachelors of Science in Business Management in 2008. Since then I have worked various jobs from Account Manager, implementations analyst, out of the box developer and now I am a team lead/manager for a small team of 2, lol. Also I live and work in the Washington DC area where government and tech jobs are abundant. I am still young, mid 30's, and now looking at the next phase of my career. I am looking at getting my masters degree and this is why I am here asking for advice/views.

I can get an MBA from a lower tier school, it is AACSB accredited, however it is not ranked or anything. My other option is a Masters in Technology Management from Georgetown. Unfortunately I cant get into their MBA program, but I can get into this program.

My main question between the two is which is greater, MBA from low tier school or specialized masters from Georgetown.

Benefits of MBA, is an MBA, and it would certainly help me going forward. However it would be online from a school far away where networking would be of no use. I do have a second choice MBA program near me that would certainly help with networking but not too sure how locked in it is for me to get accepted. It is also low tier, not ranked or prestigious, but is known locally.

Benefits of Georgetown are obviously the name recognition, and networking, however the masters is "weaker" compared to an MBA.

Im not too picky on where I want to go career wise but I want to have a strong resume when i do get there. I would like to be able to get management type positions in the Sr. Director and VP levels.

Thanks for all the help.

What are you trying to accomplish?

Going to an unknown online MBA program should be a non-starter. I say completely forget about that choice unless you just want to ‘tick the box’ on having an MBA but not realizing the true value such a degree at a name brand school gives you.

As for the Masters in Tech Mgt from G’Town, what are you looking to get out of this? It’s fairly specialized. Will this help your career? If yes, you should do this, if not, pass.

I think you need to focus on what you want to get out of having a masters degree. It seems you may lack a bit of focus and this may have come across on your essays and hurt your overall app.

In general, if you want to do an MBA, you should strive for a T15/T20 program. It can be done even from an unknown program. All it takes is a bit of gumption and focus.

Good luck!

You are definitely right on the focus, i dont know exactly where i want to go. I've been working in tech my whole career. Even when i was in account management and implementation analyst is was at a top tech company, now im a semi management with project management position working for the government. In the future I think I am looking to get into upper management positions, just not sure what aspect of management.

In regards to the online program, i probably made it sound worse than it is. Its the same place i got my undergrad, its a fairly well known school in the state its in. Its just not a top school and not in my state so it wont be recognized here in the DC area.

Also, I have a wife and two kids so studying to get into a top school etc. is very hard. I am already 11+ years into my career, so i am mostly doing this to beef up the resume for future positions. Just cant decide which beef will look better.
