MBA Hopes/Chances

Current sophomore at a T20, incoming at an EB/BB (GS, MS, EVR), and I'm very interested in the 2+2 path before doing 2 years of b-school at hopefully H/S. After recruiting kind of took my foot of the gas and think my gpa will drop to a 3.81 by the end of this year. I know the median was 3.76 for Harvard this year but by the time I apply I'm sure it will only go up, especially with all the grade inflation. What're other things I should be doing aside from keeping my grades up and securing a return to continue strengthening my profile?

To strengthen your profile for the 2+2 programs at HBS or Stanford GSB, here’s what you should focus on based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Maintain or Improve Your GPA: While a 3.81 is still competitive, aim to keep it steady or improve it slightly. Admissions committees value strong academics, and a GPA above the median will always help.

  2. Ace the GMAT/GRE: A high GMAT score (730+ for HBS) or equivalent GRE score is critical. Start preparing early and aim for a score that stands out.

  3. Develop a Compelling Narrative: Admissions committees look for a clear and compelling story about your career goals and why an MBA is essential for achieving them. Tie your experiences at the EB/BB to your future aspirations and how the 2+2 program aligns with your vision.

  4. Secure Strong Recommendations: Build relationships with mentors, managers, or professors who can provide detailed and specific examples of your performance, leadership, and potential. Recommendations that highlight your unique qualities can set you apart.

  5. Extracurricular Involvement: Engage in meaningful extracurricular activities that showcase leadership, impact, and passion. Whether it’s community service, starting a new initiative, or excelling in a hobby, these experiences add depth to your application.

  6. Networking and Pre-MBA Roles: If you’re considering a gap between undergrad and MBA, explore roles that align with your long-term goals. For example, a pre-MBA role in venture capital, private equity, or a startup could strengthen your profile if you’re interested in those areas.

  7. Optional Essay: Use the optional essay to address any potential concerns (e.g., GPA fluctuations) and to further emphasize your strengths or unique aspects of your background.

  8. Showcase Leadership and Impact: Highlight instances where you’ve demonstrated leadership, whether in internships, school projects, or extracurriculars. Admissions committees value candidates who can drive change and make an impact.

By focusing on these areas, you’ll position yourself as a strong candidate for the 2+2 programs. Good luck!
