MBA or MPP?
Greetings, I'm an active duty military officer, Navy pilot, and am currently evaluating options for my shore tour and eventual transition to civilian life. I have an idea of what i want to do, but am really unsure of which path would be best to achieve those goals. Any advice from the forum would be greatly appreciated. I've put a short description of my qualifications that describe my abilities.
College: University of Michigan, Political Science 2007. GPA 3.2, however, due to my Naval scholarship, I had to take calculus, computer science, and calculus based physics which subsequently brought my GPA down. For my master, my GPA was a 3.7. For my senior year, I was selected as Battalion Commander which entailed managing a several thousand dollar budget, and coordinating a daily training schedule for a 120 person battalion. I finished in the top 15% of students in flight school, and finished #1 in my class out of the Replacement Air Group. In terms of my current platform, I have completed two deployments that entailed flying and managing a combat aircraft with an eleven person crew in challenging and demanding environments. I have not taken the GRE or GMAT yet, but plan on taking it with in the next 6 months. If it's any help, I scored a 32 on the ACT and 1330 on the SAT in high school.
Options: Navy Political Military Masters Program- I would apply to one of the following 5 schools: Harvard, Georgetown, Stanford, Johns Hopkins, and Tufts, and if accepted to the program would attend the school to earn a masters in either public policy, international relations or something similar. After the completion of the degree, I would be obligated to serve a 2 to 3 year tour at the Pentagon or White House on a major staff or equivalent. After that I would be free to move on to civilian life
University of Michigan MBA: I would return to U of M as a NROTC instructor, and go back and attend the Ross school to earn an MBA. After a 4 year tour as an instructor, completed while going to school, I would be free to move on.
Both of the options would start in the fall of 2013 and I would end my commitment in 2017. In terms of civilian life, I would like to get into management or consulting of some sort. I love traveling, and have spent, cumulatively, a couple of years operating in foreign countries. I would love to get in the development/managment side of alternative/ renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, or something more beneficial to humanity than war fighting. Cost isn't a barrier as it will be covered by the Navy, and I will still be receiving my salary while attending school. I guess I just have no idea where to start. If anybody has any insight or advice I would be extremely grateful.
First off thanks for your service, being a Navy pilot is just about the most awesome way to serve I can think of.
I'm in management consulting at MBB and there a ton of former military guys who went and got an MBA and then joined. They seem to do really well and we love hiring them. MPP is definitely not as common, but that doesn't mean it can't be done, just that there aren't really established channels for it to happen.
you down with MPP
yeah you know me
I would venture to guess the MBA would be more helpful in transitioning to a consulting career than a masters in public policy.
Out of interest, what type of aircraft did you fly? It sounds like an amazing life experience.
I currently fly several variations of the P-3/c, getting ready to deploy this spring for 6 or 7 months, which should take me up to the end of my tour. A lot of good, and a lot of bad, let's just say I'm ready for something else...
