MBA Programs for Veterans

Understand that this is a pretty niche question but I'm finishing my last contract year as an Army officer and my goal is to break into IB. Undergrad GPA was not great (3.0) at a non target, because once I signed my active duty contract I kind of switched my focus and I figured if I can get into a good B-school it would help my chances (dependent on school and performance). Anyone know of programs geared specifically towards vets or ones that place value on military service? Thanks!

I would say that there aren't really any MBA geared towards vets that are going to place you into IB. I think USC has a veterans MBA program, but I do not think you will be recruiting for IB through there. Most top schools have about 5-10% of the class coming from government/military.

Take the GMAT as early as you can. The practice test and actual test will let you know what you are capable of. From there, you can talk to vets at schools and get a feel for what GMAT and GPA might be needed. You have the work experience.

From what I've seen, both Tuck and Cornell (in addition to the schools already mentioned) seem to be very vet friendly. I think they're also a good cultural fit for most vets. CPD is talking about a specific military MBA at USC, but I think that would be very dumb to limit yourself to a program like that. If you get into a T14, I don't think getting into IB would be an issue if you were smart about it. Most banks have vet initiatives and treat vets as a minority.

Every MBA program has a veterans club; I'd definitely reach out to people in those clubs and I'm sure they'd be happy to chat.

I'd definitely recommend looking into Service2School as you prep your applications https://service2school.org/

Sandy at Poets and Quants also talks a lot about "good military" vs "bad military." Bad military would be a very stereotypical vet -- "yes ma'am, no ma'am" type guy. Definitely worth digging into a bit more. You could find it by googling "handicapping your elite mba odds military."

Hope this helps.
