MBB Recruiting for Toronto Office at M7 School

Hi everyone

I wanted to get some insight into MBB recruiting for the Toronto office.

I have recently been accepted at a M7 b-school and will be matriculating there next fall. I will be targeting McKinsey, Bain and BCG Toronto Office for full-time recruitment post-graduation. I am targeting the Toronto office because my fiancee and her family are from the Greater Toronto Area and I also have some cousins there, so long run we plan to settle there as we will be close to family.

My question is about recruiting for the summer internship/full-time roles at these firms

  • When I interview for internships, can I / should I specify the Toronto office or should I focus on the US offices only? I am a US Citizen, so I am not sure how Visa process for Canada for US Citizens will work for a summer internship.

  • Similarly for full-time recruitment, is it better to recruit for an American office, work there for a year or two and then transfer, or is it better to directly apply for the Toronto office?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if anyone has any info on the specifics (work type, size) on the Toronto offices for any of these firms, please do share.

Thanks

First of all, the Canadian MBB offices in general have a good reputation for work / life balance (I have a lot of friends all all 3 and can attest to that) so it is a great choice

Now to your actual questions, you'll need to put down 3 or 4 offices in order of preference in your application so feel free to put Toronto first. Given the similar culture and your personal situation, I don't see why you wouldn't directly apply to Toronto first rather than trying to go to an American office and transferring after a year. Visa is a non-issue as you can get a TN (all you need is a job offer and the Visa is processed on the spot at the border).

Obviously, all 3 firms are fairly similar, but Bain tend to do more mining / energy engagements and only have an office in Toronto so more travel to Saskatchewan and Alberta. Mck also does a lot of that work, but they have offices in Calgary and Vancouver. BCG does a lot of FIG stuff which is nice because it's local.
