Miami University (OH) chances?

Hey everyone, it's my first post on the site and I look forward to hearing what everyone has to say. I will be attending Miami University (OH) this coming fall, and I am wondering what my chances of breaking into banking are? I realize Farmer is not exactly a "target", but is it considered a semi-target? I passed up admittance into Kelley (Indiana) for substantially more scholarship money from Miami; and I am now wondering if I made the right choice.

Huge alumni network in Chicago! Combine that with the college experience you will get there and it is one of the better choices in the midwest. Like BT said, Kelley would have been a little better probably for IB but you will have a much better time at Miami (full disclosure: I'm from Oxford). Let me know if you have any questions at MU or internships in the greater Cincinnati area.

University of Miami Ohio is just fine for breaking into Investment Banking. In the future, I can sync you up with people who have been to that school and got into IBD (pm me your sophomore year with a solid GPA and finance focus of course)

The downside is it will be a bit harder to get into the BB's, but given the cash you're saving with said scholarship it sounds like it may have been a pretty good decision for you. You can always jump around, lots of times finance makes your resume look like a ping pong machine bouncing around all the time. Good luck, part 2 of this will be a decent guide for what the Street looks for when interviewing/recruiting as well.

Miami University = school in Ohio University of Miami = school in Florida

You'll be fine, they're raising their Wall Street profile every year. PM me with questions.

The old quote around campus is "Miami was a university (1809) before Florida was a state (1845)"

Thanks a lot for all the advice guys, much appreciated! Do either of you have any experience with the investment banking club on campus? It looks to be a good deal to join, and I plan on it; just wondering if either of you had any insight to what they do. Thanks in advance!

The IB Club on campus is a must if you want to get into banking. Difficult to get into but gets you in front of head finance faculty that help kids get into banks, and also upperclassmen who have already been through recruiting and will be going into IB full time. Still not exactly a "target" school, but IB presence has definitely picked up recruiting-wise (JPM, Blair, RBS, and a few other randoms recruit on campus) - and there's a strong alumni network at a number of others.

Hi Troy,

I am actually currently the head of the Investment Banking Club at Miami University and while we are not considered a target school, if you are dedicated and work hard, getting into ibanking is no problem. Make sure you come out for IBC recruitment next fall as the club really prepares you technically and professionally for ibanking interviews. As mentioned above, our past few classes have done quite well with graduates going to GS, MS, JPM, Citi, Baml, and various top-notch MM firms such as William Blair. PM me in the fall if you are interested in recruitment. I assure you, as long as you really want it, getting into ibanking from Miami is very possible. Anyways, Miami is also a really fun school and I've had the time of my life both socially and academically.
