Military Officer
Hey guys- military officer here applying to bschools to switch into finance/maybe consulting. Looking at HBS, Wharton, Columbia with Kellogg, Tuck bringing up the rear.
Obviously having no real finance background (apart from being an Econ major 6 years ago at a kinda candy ass liberal arts school), I figured Columbia may be the best option due to the opportunity to get some on the job training during the school year with an part time internship.
Worried about the pure case study at HBS (if I even get in...) with no financial foundation, and NYC undeniably trumps philly for location. Kellogg and Tuck may force my hand towards consulting a bit...
Am I way off base with this? Thanks.
Former military here -- I'm not 100% sure what your question is, but you should go to the best MBA program you can get into. Do some searching around on the website, but there is definitely a hierarchy that has been discussed ad nauseam here Harvard/Stanford...Wharton/Booth...Sloan/Kellogg/Tuck/gets even more blurry beyond that. There is no special program for consulting or banking...its really about getting into the best program and you can recruit for what interests you, so I would consider expanding your school list a bit. Happy to discuss offline if helpful.
Also, former military. Any T15 school will give you the opportunity to pursue finance or consulting. The employers and opportunities are just better the higher up the rankings you go. I also don't think HBS's case method will limit your opportunity if you were to get in.
For your application, just say you want to be a consultant. Every school produces a ton and military background provides some of the soft skills for consulting.
not to get too personal, but can you tell me about your military experience/which branch/ what type of leadership positions you are using to promote your experience? i'm about 2.5 years out still... but i need to start developing my apps. Also when in your career did you study for gmat/ how did you score?
Study on shore duty and take the test as far in advance as possible. I started two years out. I studied 4 months took it, didn't get the score I wanted, studied another 3 months and didn't get the score I wanted and then took it once more 2 months after that and broke 700. My last attempt was in February of the year I applied. With the GMAT out of the way, I was able to start reaching out to schools and partnered with Service 2 School. Getting the GMAT out of the way will allow you to focus on the other aspects of your application, which are equally as important.
