Need Some Career Advice... Work, MBA, MFin?
This will be somewhat comprehensive, and ultimately the question without any prior background is should I keep trying to look for a job? Should I go back to school? Whats your advice?
Background
I'm a recent graduate from Ohio University. I triple majored in Finance, Business Analytics, and Management Information Systems, with a GPA: of 3.646. I have had a bad stream of luck within the past couple of months of my life which has had me ultimately confused with what I should consider. Before graduation, I had a full-time offer at a hedge fund in crypto-research / trading, the fund was acquired my SR year, and new management let everyone go except for the head PM, and the MD. So basically my experience there during my junior year didn't turn into anything. Whilst during my senior year I ultimately had a change of heart and decided I wanted to be in quant trading. This hasn't resulted in anything after applying to most of all prop shops. I luckily did have a chance at Akuna, Optiver, and Jump, but like many wasn't able to get far into the technical tests, my best being at Akuna where I went 4/5. So after this, I had another change of heart, equity research. I've had significantly more opportunities and had 2 actual final round interviews for which I just wasn't the one picked. To be fair I've done more work than most, and I'm proud to say I have called, and or emailed every single place in the United States which does institutional/equity - research. The sentiment has kind of remained the same. Small shops although they are interested do not have the ability to train me, and large places that do, won't give me an interview because I have no relevant experience. I really have worked my ass off doing 10 + hour days every day since May, and ultimately it's just 100's rejections, and not even an HR interview.
So I currently contemplating do I go back to school? Where should I go to school if I do? MBA or MFin? Also I really think could get a MBA from a IVY, but i'd need 5-10 years of work experience.
Should I keep trying to get a job? LinkedIn, Indeed, and E-financial Careers are stale as fuck now. I just need some advice or just some thoughts on the situation.
You need to stop pigeon holing yourself into specific, niche, highly soughtafter areas. At this point you take whatever job you can get.
If you've really been able to get interviews where you say I am sure you have the capacity to land something else if you do not force yourself into such a small area.
MIT, Baruch, Princeton MFins are more quantitative. Vandy, USC generalized.
Copy. Should I be focused more on the rotational programs? Or just any Corp-Fin job?
bump
If you’re still having issues landing anything in equity research/quant training or anything else, then I would recommend getting into a MSF program. Getting into top MBA programs without significant work experience would be an uphill battle. MSF programs don’t really require much experience (if any) and they are typically used for anyone who recently graduated from undergrad.
I would aim for top MSF programs (MIT, Vandy, Princeton, Georgetown, UT Austin, U of Rochester). You should have a solid shot for equity research positions in these programs. For quant, you should try getting into MIT or something similar.
That’s my 2 cents.
