Optimizing for WLB and Income Growth

I joined IB after business school and left after two years for a consulting role. I’ve decided that I miss finance but am unsure whether I want to return to the IB lifestyle, I don’t mind working hard but 80 hours a week in my 30s doesn’t sound great. At the same time I don’t see myself enjoying corp dev long term (the traditional ib exit) and I want to find something with better compensation growth.  I’m thinking of the following roles but wondering what else you’ve seen post-mba bankers pivot to. I’m not in NYC and would prefer not to be but am open to it for the perfect role.

-Investment banking at a less sweaty bank or possibly capital markets

-Private banking or wealth management (like this space a lot but worry the space will shrink longterm outside of UHNW)

-Sales (possibly partnerships, B2B in my coverage industry, or institutional sales)

-Investor relations for a fund (somewhat location limited)

-Asset management (very difficult post mba?)

-Real estate debt or investing (find it very interesting but probably difficult with no real estate background)

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and potential career paths for post-MBA bankers looking to optimize for work-life balance (WLB) and income growth:

Potential Career Paths:

  1. Investment Banking at a Less Sweaty Bank or Capital Markets:

    • This can offer a better work-life balance compared to traditional IB roles, especially if you find a firm with a culture that prioritizes WLB.
  2. Private Banking or Wealth Management:

    • This space is appealing, especially if you enjoy building relationships and managing client portfolios. However, there is a concern about the long-term viability outside of Ultra High Net Worth (UHNW) clients.
  3. Sales (Partnerships, B2B, Institutional Sales):

    • Sales roles, particularly in your coverage industry, can be lucrative and offer a different kind of challenge compared to traditional finance roles. These roles often come with performance-based compensation, which can lead to significant income growth.
  4. Investor Relations for a Fund:

    • This role can be somewhat location-limited but offers a good balance between finance and communication. It’s a strategic role that involves managing relationships with investors and can be quite rewarding.
  5. Asset Management:

    • Transitioning to asset management post-MBA can be challenging but not impossible. It requires a strong understanding of markets and investment strategies. Networking and leveraging your MBA connections can be crucial here.
  6. Real Estate Debt or Investing:

    • This field is interesting and can be lucrative, but it might be difficult to break into without a real estate background. Consider roles that allow you to leverage your finance skills while gaining real estate experience.

Additional Insights:

  • Corporate Development:

    • While you mentioned not seeing yourself in corp dev long-term, it’s worth noting that many post-MBA bankers do transition into these roles. They offer a good balance of strategic and financial work.
  • Consulting:

    • Returning to consulting, especially in financial services or strategy consulting, can also be a viable option. It offers a mix of finance and strategic work with potentially better WLB compared to IB.
  • Startups and Tech:

    • Some ex-bankers move into roles at startups or tech companies, particularly in business strategy or operations. These roles can offer significant growth opportunities and a different kind of work environment.

Considerations:

  • Location:

    • While you prefer not to be in NYC, some roles might require relocation. However, many firms are increasingly offering remote or flexible work arrangements.
  • Networking:

    • Leveraging your MBA network and industry connections can open doors to roles that might not be immediately obvious. Networking is key in finding the right fit for your skills and career goals.

Conclusion:

Each of these roles has its own set of challenges and rewards. It’s important to weigh your personal preferences, career goals, and the specific opportunities available in your desired location. Networking and staying informed about industry trends will be crucial in making a successful transition.

Fair, also family office AM which can be non-nyc and/or completely virtual. Although its AM you may really need to be able to sell(maybe not as much as WM) and hopefully build a loyal book as you get more senior, otherwise you are properly screwed if you are fired/let go and don't have a specialized skillset and clients who won't follow you. I interned at a firm like this and comp/wlb was pretty good, but I saw a vp get let go and havent seen he/her secure a job which would probably be a lot easier with highly transferable skills and a loyal client base.

As an As1 looking at around 175k TC. Goes above 200k for more experienced associates. VPs are likely doing high 200 to high 300 on total cash comp. Above that I’m not certain, but I imagine the senior people in my group are looking at at least mid 400/500k cash with stock on top. So not life changing money, but pretty decent when you’re getting home by 5:30 every day.
