Post-college extracurricular ideas?
Considering applying to B-school in about 18-24 months, concerned I don't really have any solid extracurriculars on my resume.
-Blue belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu;
-Speak a second language (learned during a 1 year overseas immersive foreign language course though, not self taught or anything);
-CFA charterholder (does that even count?)
-In UG was the president of a club that organized guest lecturers for econ students, long time ago now though.
It's surprisingly hard to find non-BS extracurriculars. I'd rather do something that actually teaches a skill rather than some generic "volunteer" thing that you basically just use to tick a box. Any ideas?
Donate a soccer field or something to a local school.
Sailing.
Become a junior achievement mentor. (teaching financial literacy to children)
Sounds like you have 12-24 months to start training for a marathon or triathlon.
(Just say you speak a second language do not include the disclaimer on your profile)
If it is a common language reach out to the local community that speaks that language and tutor the children in English.
Just tossing some out there.
Appreciate the advice. Re the other stuff I mentioned: are my BJJ (which I haven't won anything for) and my UG club worth mentioning in the essay?
Re sailing, it's funny I actually thought getting my divers license and going on a few dives might be kinda cool. I'm sure I could spin that into an essay response.
While BJJ and learning a second language are interesting, they are pretty much self-serving and don't count for much in terms of 'extra-curriculars.'
Since you have your CFA Charter, why don't you volunteer on a committee for your local CFA society? Perhaps you can organize some lunch and learns, study sessions for those preparing for the exam or just increase engagement in the broader finance community?
See Build Your MBA Leadership Profile Through Community Involvement for some suggestions.
Unlike for college where you are simply trying to rack up community service hours or demonstrate excellence in a hobby or passion, business schools are looking for more. Ideally how you spend your time outside of work aligns with your interests, allows you to develop new skills and/or adds value to your broader community.
Curious what you mean by "you shouldn't simply demonstrate excellence in a hobby or passion?" Is it not best if your ECs all align with your specific post-MBA goals?
