Real Estate MBA Programs - Fund Management
My goal is to secure a fund/portfolio management role at a reputable REPE firm. I understand this takes time, and I have a real passion for it. I have 4 years of experience at well known firms, which include a REIT and a REPE firm. Analysts at both, and broad exposure in Asset Management, fund management, development and acquisitions.
Academically, I'd like to take the time to pursue an MBA and concentrate in finance and/or real estate to better position myself for my career goal. The forum has a ton of schools that fit this, and all of which I'm considering, but I'm not sure which is best for the line of business I want to pursue. Any guidance? Also, HWS aren't even reaches for me.
HSW aren't reaches for you in that you think you're a lock to get in or you have no chance? It's the usual finance schools that you should be targeting : HBS, GSB, Wharton, Booth, CBS, Stern
Thanks Frank. HSW aren't reaches for me because my chances are slim after looking at their class profiles.
Ok that makes more sense and given that you're likely not going to be a match at Booth/CBS either I assume. What are your stats? You could look into programs such as Stern's MS in Real Estate which is much easier to get into than top MBAs.

I spent undergrad at a school like Duke/Emory/Vanderbilt/UNC and majored in finance and real estate. Decent GPA, but nothing to write home about.

This forum lists a ton of schools that are considered top RE programs, and all of which I'm considering, but I'm not sure which are best for the line of business I want to pursue. I want a program that's doable (probably not HBS or Stanford), carries weight and offers a unique student body. Any guidance?
Career wise, it seems like portfolio management is an area that you get introduced to once you've proven yourself in asset management and/or acquisitions. Can anyone highlight a career path for this field? Would REIB experience help at all?

I agree with these +Cornell. Also, maybe not quite on the same level but I would probably add Wisconsin and Emory.
Agree with the above. I've been impressed with the UNC, Cornell, and Wisconsin MBA's that I have worked/interned with in the past.

Most MBAs are ridiculously expensive, and too generalist!
Avoid online MBAS. Most MBAS are fluff in general and the value add is the name brand of the institution, alumni network and on campus recruiting. No online MBA programs have those qualities, at least not yet. Maybe a thousand years from now lol.
Managing a 'fund' or million / billions of other peoples dollars is a big job for bright people. The pay is great and the applicant pool is tremendous. An online MBA is more likely to to get you kicked out of the race as opposed to move you forward. Think about it.
In short, the answer to your question is: No there aren't any USEFUL online MBAs specializing in investment management. At least not yet.
