Rice ECON vs UT McCombs

I am very distressed between these two choices. I love rice and it’s my dream school but I willing to sacrifice that if it means UT has better opportunities for IBanking. IVe heard recruiting is superior at UT but Rice is more prestigious. I don’t like the big school culture at UT at all.. but i wanna know if this sacrifice is worth it. Also I got into Vanderbilt so I can choose that school as well. Any help is appreciated!

I know of a number of Rice econ majors (including double majors) who landed jobs as IB and CB analysts in Houston.

If you are dead-set on NYC, then UT has a more established recruiting pipeline, particularly if you are in the Business Honors Program. However, the competition at UT for interview slots is tremendous, given the large size of the undergraduate population. At Rice, by contrast, a solid combination of GPA and extracurriculars is almost certain to get you some on-campus interviews with the Houston banks. Remember, too, that these banks are literally right down Main Street from the Rice campus. That makes the OCR and superday processes much more manageable for a busy student.

If Rice is indeed your dream school, and if you can afford it, then I certainly would not let anxiety about limited job opportunities in finance dissuade you from attending.

Rice has much better recruiting than UT in Texas. So you should not be considering UT. Then its between Rice and Vandy. I attend Vandy and can attest that the recruiting is great for ATL, Charlotte, NYC and some Texas. If you want to work in Texas after school go to Rice. If not go to Vanderbilt in my opinion. Also Rice isn't as fun as Vanderbilt I've heard.

Just go to Rice. As people have said, opportunities may be marginally better at UT but it's also MUCH more competitive and plenty of people get very solid banking jobs coming out of Rice. I'd bet the average Rice student has a better outcome than your average UT--hardly a "sacrifice." The only thing I'd be mindful of is that Rice has a less established pipeline than UT, so you'll need to be more proactive in networking and getting internships.

More importantly, Rice is your dream school. It's silly to turn it down for a minor difference in recruiting.
