Senior in high school, need advice

Hi guys,

I’m about to be a senior in high school, and I’ve been thinking about ib. As of this summer, I’ve been studying for the SAT and am trying to get a 1520+ score. My gpa is a 3.8 uw and a 4.0+ weighted. I don’t think I have a chance at Harvard or upenn unless a miracle happens. I do believe I have a decent chance at NYU with my current stats if I do early decision. I have a couple questions that I need advice on. Theoretically, can’t I just apply as a major that’s not that competitive to get into the university I want to, and then change my major?  Do I need a specific major for investment banking? I’m thinking that if I don’t get into a top 14 finance school, I’ll change careers and go to law school as my undergrad does not matter when applying to a T14 law school. However, I’d like to get into ib. Do you guys think it would be possible for me to get into atleast NYU with my stats?

Your SAT and GPA doesn't tell the whole picture. Admissions are holisitc, so aspects like your activities, essays, LORs, and cultral background also play a big part. The best schools for IB comprise of the Ivy League, NYU, Georgetown, UChicago, Duke, Notre Dame, & Boston College.

When applying to colleges, many just consider how much a school sends into IB. If you are instate for UVA, UMich, UT-Austin or Berkley, definatly consider those as they all send many into IB. However, they're pretty large public universities, so the competition will be stressful compared to a LAC like Williams or Amhert. This is why it is important to consider how many students at a particular school gunning for IB actually get it. You can do some research and ask graduates or current students how competitive the process was for them to gain a better sense.

Lastly, another important factor is what firms recruit there. Brigham Young University isn't a target, but the students who do IB usually do it at Goldman Sachs, which is pretty damn good.

Your stats are pretty good for a target school. Assuming that the rest of your application is on-par, I'd say you have a good chance. Good luck!

Interesting note on BYU and their placement:

GS recruiting is a shit show, they get campus visits (or virtual) but place sporadically. They placed one kid there for 2022.

CS placement is very good (at least historically). Reason being the CEO of Americas is a BYU guy. Usually place 1 in LA and 2-4 in NY

Lazard placement is good (3 a year)

Citi SF placement has been very good but a new MD this year didn’t allow them to interview any students

Most the EBs don’t recruit there (PJT, PWP, Centerview, Greenhill, Moelis I believe, and Guggenheim)
