SMU vs. Boston College (Carroll)

Have been admitted to both and received money from SMU; however, I’m fortunate enough that money won’t play a large factor in choosing colleges. Which school places better for IB: SMU or BC's Carroll School of Business?Which is more prestigious? Thanks

What you originally posted "This is not true. ALTS is only recognized by the banks in Houston. Know a kid who's not in alts that's going to PJT. Alts is not a very impressive program"

Short answer is that you're talking out of your ass.  Had several kids in my class (and in other classes) go BB/EB in NY, SF, & Chicago.  I also went to a non-Houston bank w/ multiple other kids from my class.  Over 90% of kids in Alts place into IB every year, which doesn't constitute an unimpressive program.  Kudos to your buddy who got a PJT offer - I have a buddy who wound up in RX at an EB out of a lower rung TX state school - wouldn't recommend it over a program w/ 90%+ IB placement rates.

Don’t know too much on which one is more prestigious, but there are a few factors at play here. SMU’s alts program is solid, so definitely try to get in there if you pick SMU. SMU predominately places in Houston vs any other city. If you’re wanting an NYC gig, I’d probably pick BC. Also not sure on the culture at BC, but SMU has the strangest culture out of any school I’ve spent time around. Everyone has money, so  going out is more of an affair than a traditional trashy college outing. Greek life is huge and insanely expensive ($7-10k+ per year). You’ll need to be in one if you’re looking to be social.

Have also heard SMU is tough if you’re not a trust fund kid and in the right fraternity

Can't speak much on BC but I can share some thoughts on SMU. If you get into the Alts program then you will get looks from all of the top banks. All of the top banks do OCR at SMU and every year we send around 50 people to IB. I'd say the breakdown is roughly 10 NYC, 25-30 Houston, and 10-15 other. Houston is definitely the main destination for most kids in Cox but if NYC is your goal it is also certainly attainable. I'm in the Alts program right now, so if you have any other questions feel free to PM me.

This is pretty accurate. SMU alum on buyside here and can speak to the placement / general preparation that the Alts program gives you.

BC is no doubt a great school and probably edges SMU out in general prestige. But SMU / Alts has established a very impressive pipeline into the top banks in NYC including GS / MS and CVP / EVR / MoCo / PJT. Top candidates from Alts have historically had great success in breaking into a top program and tend to perform very well on the desk. Even mid-tier kids in the program place to top Houston platforms.

Happy to answer anything

Notwithstanding the above, SMU is definitely Greek dominated and more 'superficial' than other schools, but I don't necessarily agree with the comment that everyone is wealthy (definitely are some students that are though).

I went on scholarship and was able to have a great social life and ended up in a great place post-grad. Would encourage OP to tour / reach out to SMU alums or students to get a feel for it because culture will be a big part of the student experience.

Bottom line: SMU offers great career development / IB placements, but culture is very unique and not for everyone

Yes, but assuming you are coming from a top banking / PE program, undergrad doesn't matter that much
