S&T -> M7 -> IB
Currently working in S&T at a decent MM shop (HSBC/Nomura/Soc Gen) as An2 on the macro trading desk based out of Asia. Wanted to know if my background would help me secure an M7 school if I stick out till A2/VP or should I switch to Strategy/IB to help my chances?
Is S&T looked down upon by B-Schools?
I'm from a target undergrad but chose S&T over IB because I enjoyed trading/markets in college. Also, having majored in a highly quantitative STEM degree, it seemed like a more natural choice at the time. Obv don't think so now.
Any views appreciated.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, your background in S&T at a reputable MM shop, combined with a target undergrad and a highly quantitative STEM degree, positions you well for an M7 MBA program. Admissions committees value diverse professional experiences, and S&T is not inherently looked down upon. In fact, your quantitative background and trading experience can differentiate you from the typical IB applicant pool.
However, there are a few considerations to strengthen your application:
Leadership and Impact: Highlight leadership roles, significant contributions, and measurable impact in your current role. B-schools value candidates who demonstrate leadership potential, regardless of their industry.
Career Narrative: Clearly articulate why you want to transition from S&T to IB and how an MBA fits into your long-term goals. Admissions committees appreciate a well-thought-out and logical career progression.
Extracurriculars: Showcase involvement in activities outside of work that demonstrate leadership, teamwork, and a well-rounded personality.
GMAT/GRE Scores: Ensure your test scores are competitive for M7 programs, as they will complement your strong academic and professional background.
Switching to Strategy or IB could help if you feel it aligns better with your post-MBA goals, but it’s not a necessity. Many successful M7 applicants come from S&T backgrounds, especially if they can effectively communicate their story and aspirations.
Ultimately, focus on excelling in your current role, building a compelling application, and networking with alumni from your target schools to strengthen your candidacy.
