Statement of Purpose: First Generation College Graduate

Does anyone give a shit that my Dad was a high school dropout and my Mom never went to college? I've heard being a first generation college graduate helps with admissions, but I feel kind of douchey bringing it up in my statement of purpose.

They do care. I had a similar backstory that I used for undergrad. I shied away from it a bit for MBA admissions, but with multiple essay questions, I had it in there a bit.

I didn't talk about it a lot during my program, but I mentioned it off-hand to the head of our career center during my exit interview. She actually got teared up and really emotional on my behalf, and was really interested in my story . Goes to show that some people find that kind of backstory meaningful and powerful.

So yes, talk about it in the greater context of who you are and what you plan to bring to the table. Just don't make yourself out to be some victim in need of special treatment, and you'll feel less "douchey".

I came from a similar situation and was very embarrassed to discuss that for a long time. Do not be afraid to mention it in your applications. It is a part of who you are. In one of my MBA applications, I even discussed what it means to me to be able to bring financial stability to my family. I think that people connect with stories like that.

Not to sound too callous/Machiavellian but remember your audience. People in academia are not as cut throat/by the numbers etc. as the people you find in finance. A lot of them genuinely want to help people and eat up those sort of stories.

Now that being said, don't over do it/mention it everywhere/make it your only angle, but a few drops here and there when it makes sense can't hurt.

Hell even if both of your parents have masters degrees you could always say, "I'm the first person in my family working towards a PhD" life comes down to making choices and using any and all advantages that life presents you. If you don't you will be like those people who blame me for all of the ills of their life. I just laugh at them and stub out a $100 dollar cigar that i just lit on the side walk they are protesting on and keep on walking.
