Target School Econ vs. Semi-Target School Finance

I'm a rising college freshman and have been accepted to both a Target (not to the business school, though, so I'd consider econ as my first choice major) and a Semi-target for finance. I was wondering whether, in general, it would be more favorable to take the target route despite not being a part of the business school and having to study econ, as opposed to the semi-target route as a finance student. I'm looking to go into IB or MC after college. Any and all advice is appreciated.

Target school econ and don’t look back. I transferred from finance at a semi-target to econ at a target and the opportunities are so much better at a target even if you are not in the business school. Nobody really cares about finance v. econ in my experience and you can get involved in business clubs if you want more exposure to finance stuff.

Also, if this is Penn and your worried about CAS v. Wharton, CAS still places better than any semi-target.

Thanks so much for your response, I really appreciate it. Unfortunately, it wouldn't exactly be Penn caliber, as I'm looking into Umich's LSA. I know Umich (and Ross) overall is still relatively well known as a target, but hope being in LSA wouldn't be too much of a limiting factor.

Other commenter is correct. Ross is the only target within UMich but you I know multiple people who’ve transferred from LSA to Ross and even more who’ve landed great jobs from LSA. If you do well academically and are active in clubs, you should be fine. Especially if you’re proactive enough to post on WSO as a high schooler.

Lmao the subtle throw in of UMich LSA as a target. Dude just say the school name so people can have a better chance to guide you. There’s literally no downside, and you’re just hurting yourself by misclassifying UMich LSA as a target since people are likely thinking you’re talking abt a real non b-school target (I.e UPenn CAS). The answers you’re getting are evidently going to be biased and won’t provide any true light.

Hey man I'm just trying to get a generalized answer. I understand very clearly now the status LSA has as a nontarget and just want to provide a response for more to use beyond just me. Maybe I'm not the most informed on its reputation and what not but I'm just trying to help myself and others gain a better understanding.

Go to semi-target finance over UMich LSA.

LSA is a non-target. Transferring to Ross is hard. If you do transfer, it doesn't matter, too late. Club placement happens freshman winter and its the most important thing for recruiting.

Assuming this is something like Notre Dame / Vandy based on your midwest geography. I would take both over LSA.
