Target School, Failed 2026 SA Recruiting - Any Hope Left?

I just finished my sophomore year at a target school. Since January, I've been applying to 2026 summer internships for IB, PE, wealth management (basically anything I've found that isn't consulting). Out of a 100 applications, I got around 4 first round interviews (all for pretty small firms) but never moved past first round (either rejected or ghosted). I did essentially no networking, which I know is probably why I struggled, especially from a target having so many people I could've reached out to.

I want to start trying more aggressively but I have no idea if I even have a chance anymore. I'm currently interning at a pretty small (50 people) wealth management firm, and my GPA + resume are pretty solid. I don't even know how to start networking right now because 1. I feel like it's too late and anyone I reach out to will know that I'm just reaching out to try to get a job and 2. I'm currently interning and don't know how I'll be able to schedule calls in the first place?? From what I've seen, most of the big banks and firms are closing up everything so I don't know where to look or what I can do.

It feels really awful knowing I blew my chance and essentially having wasted my time at a target school where I could've gotten good opportunities like I see so many of my peers doing now. I really don't know what I can do at this point.

It’s not over yet! Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a roadmap to get back on track:

1. Leverage Your Current Internship

  • Even though your current wealth management internship is at a small firm, make the most of it. Build strong relationships, ask for meaningful projects, and ensure you can speak confidently about your contributions during future interviews.
  • Highlight transferable skills like client interaction, financial analysis, or portfolio management.

2. Start Networking Aggressively

  • It’s not too late. Networking is a game-changer, even if you’re starting late. Many WSO users have shared success stories of landing interviews through relentless networking.
  • How to start:
    • Use LinkedIn, alumni databases, and your school’s career center to identify alumni in IB, PE, or related fields.
    • Send personalized messages. Acknowledge your late start but emphasize your eagerness to learn and grow.
    • Aim for informational calls. People are more likely to respond if you’re seeking advice rather than directly asking for a job.
  • Scheduling calls: If your internship schedule is tight, try early mornings, lunch breaks, or evenings. Most professionals are flexible if you’re respectful of their time.

3. Target Smaller Firms

  • Many boutique and middle-market firms recruit later in the cycle. Focus on these firms for both internships and full-time roles.
  • Examples include regional boutiques, smaller private equity shops, and family offices. These firms often value hustle and determination over pedigree.

4. Prepare for Full-Time Recruiting

  • Use the next 12 months to master technicals and behavioral questions. Resources like the WSO IB Interview Course can help you get up to speed.
  • If you don’t land a junior summer IB internship, consider roles in private equity, corporate finance, or even another wealth management firm. These can serve as stepping stones for full-time IB recruiting.

5. Consider a Master’s Program

  • If you don’t secure a full-time IB role after graduation, a one-year Master’s in Finance (e.g., Georgetown, Vanderbilt) can give you another shot at recruiting.

6. Stay Positive and Persistent

  • Many WSO users have shared stories of striking out initially but eventually breaking into IB through sheer persistence. It’s not about how you start but how you finish.

You’re at a target school, which means you still have access to a strong alumni network and resources. Start networking today, focus on smaller firms, and prepare for full-time recruiting. You’ve got this!
